Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I followed my car's GPS and found myself on my way into the mine site. I parked the car at a spot where I thought I could walk to the trig and lookout site. As I was about to go, someone from the mines pulled up in his 4WD. I approached and told him what I was trying to do. He told me that it was private property and suggested that I go to reception and ask the surveyor called Brendan for permission to access the site. He was very friendly and thought it was the best way to go about it. I drove down to the office area and there was just nowhere to park, so I decided to let this one go. As I was driving off towards Maitland, i spotted the trig through the trees and decided that this would be the best way to go in the era of...well, getting access to sensitive areas.

We arrived at this lookout today, taking a quick detour while chasing a nearby cache. I thought to my self, this is the sort of trig point cache that would appear on GA.

Home tonight, and I was right.... Did not take photo of trig point, but did of the view. Hope this suffices.
Great view.

I hadn't really read the logs before our trip today, and didn't think access to this would be so easy with the young fellow with us, but with a driveway and steps directly to it, it was a gift. Great view over the mine too.....

Out with Team Merlin to find this trig.

Driving up to the public viewing platform with JJCC and the family, we were expecting to see a lonely looking neglected concrete pedestal, but when we rounded the corner the trig was standing proud on the horizon. The concrete pedestal has had a new lick of white paint, nameplate is intact and now sports a new pole and black vains. Also on the pedestal is a dedication plaque for the opening of the viewing platform. Definitely well worth the detour from the main road.

1835 While heading down to the Hunter Valley from Taree for some Waymarks I thought I would grab a few trigs as well. With this one as a Waymark it was a real BONUS! By the end of the weekend I would be up to 65 waymarking trigs Visited, on top of another 65 trigs Posted.
And unloved trig 'to-boot'. The coordinates for the turn-off on the Waymarking site were a boon. Might add them here. Per Mix's description: "The turn off to the lookout is at S32º 27.672' E150º 58.923'. DO NOT ENTER THE GATE AT S32º 27.761' E150º 58.807' OR YOU'LL HAVE SECURITY ONTO YOU IN A FLASH." There was quite a few kangaroos enjoying the grass, and they weren't too afraid.
Found @ 1835. The name plate is still on the concrete pedestal. No post or vanes, but it seems that it hasn't changed recently.

nice view from up here. lots of holes in the ground and dirt to look at.
I am surprised that this is the first log, with a 4YO cache so nearby.

if this is the first log, does this make me FTF?
