Description

Rock cairn and geodetic trig point.

There are two options for getting to this trig. From Car Villa or from the Ben Lomond Road just before the village at the top. Several guide books describe the trip in detail. From Car Villa it is 3.8Km each way with only some gentle grades and a bit of rock hopping in places. You will see plenty of wild flowers during early summer and spectacular scenery on the way so try for a clear day. Co-ords may be slightly off but just follow the snow poles to the top and you can't miss it. There is also a Geodetic GPS survey point ST-1134 right next to the trig.

This point was for a long time thought to be the highest point in Tasmania. Mt Ossa was re-measured at some stage and found to be about 43M higher and took the prize as the highest point in Tasmania.

Easter in Tassie, had a day up on Ben Lomond, picked this up on one of our short walks in the area.

17-Jan-21
Went for a wander around the plateau on a rather cool and windy "summers" day.

08-Jan-21
Out and about with Lil Rafa caching in the north. A trip to Ben Lomond was discussed and here we are. no wind. Photo attached.

Out and about with RLD4963 for a few days in the north of the state. Nice day on the mountain today, no wind. Photo attached.

A beautiful walk up from the village this morning before a wild storm hit. Apparently the gusts were 110kmh, no wonder it was hard to stand up! Stunning views from up here. TFTTP!

We had the toolman over from the mainland so myself and goose showed him round the Northeast of Tassie for a few days.

With an incredible drive to the carpark area we had a bit of a reccy due to the weather not being very good and then made the call to gear up and walk to this trig point, views were intermittent since visibility would go from 5m to a 100m in seconds.

Top location and could be even better if I could something Laughing

With 1toolman over from Vic, SSR and I took him for a bit of a took of the lower north east. Ben Lomond was included in the tour and despite poor visibility for most of the walk we enjoyed the climb to the summit from the village.

It appears that Sam Carter has a bad influence on me. I only seem to do GCA caches when she is around - and so there were three on this trip. It also may be that, at my age, I'm set in my ways and don't look for the alternative website often enough. Whatever. The weather was coolish but we warmed up with the climb to the 2nd Summit cache site and then cross-countried to the actual summit. Fantastic spot.

We found the nearby physical cache by coming up across the ski fields. Having reached the actual summit and located the trig marker (at what is my highest Tasmanian point reached so far … I think), we then thought it might be quicker and easier to return by going down to the track on the NE side. It wasn't, which made our return a little later than we'd intended. However, the views on the whole route were spectacular and it was well worth the visit.

Once at GZ, I found one of the RM points and thought that the rock cairn was the trig until I turned around and found the trig!

09-Sep-12
Had a great time getting up to this through the snow and ice. The T lifts were not working due to the wind. Took a photo of GPSr at GZ which I will try to upload soon.

What an amazing day in Ben Lomond Nat Pk. Not a cloud to be seen ANYWHERE. Plenty of snow around though not enough for skiing yet. The previous night had been
-9 degrees according to the ranger so the track up was treacherously icy. We watched each footstep very carefully and were very pleased to get back down to the road uninjured. While visiting the ski village a ranger pointed out a spotted quoll which was wandering around the base of the buildings in broad daylight. Lucky us Very Happy
Many thanks shazcol for adding to our enjoyment of an already stunning day on the mountain. ClappingClapping

Found while caching in the area a very cold day and snow.

16-Mar-11
A very pleasant day as we turned onto the Ben Lomond Road but as we ascended Jacobs Ladder, low clouyd came in and restricted the view. Despite this, it was a pleasant walk from the ski fields carpark to GZ. From the north to the east, the surrounding mountains were in thick dark cloud but in all other directions there was broken cloud. We got a good view down the ski slopes and across into the Midland Valley. Two photos are added to the gallery - the stone survey marker and the geodetic GPS marker. An enjoyable cache. TFTC

found this one at the same time as we grab the nearby FTF

29-Jul-10
A clear day with only a light breeze, (forecast was for showers and possible thunder storms in the north east),and very little snow for the middle of winter. I could have stayed a lot longer but you can never trust the weather at this time of year.

25-Jul-10
Took the trek from Car Villa. Very spectacular.

One of my wishes on a scout bushwalking training weekend was to make a small deviation up to this trig point and with a combination of fine weather and a paucity of snow we were able to do this. i.e. no low visiblity navigation exercises nor snow cave making activities.... Our group started at Carr Villa and followed the path through the "Big Opening" onto the plateau where after navigating our way across the "Plains of Heaven" we found an icy gulley that led to Legges Tor. Our group spent some time up here admiring the view while I kept on thinking that there were at least 4 sites for future geocaches. This area is a wonderful place worth visiting and geocaching gives us all a good excuse! Very Happy Anyway photos were taken, the views surveyed once more before we walked back to Carr Villa where it then decided to rain....just when we were putting up our tents.
Thanks Shazcol for identifying this trig point in an area worth exploring.

Spectacular walk from Car Villa to the top. Heaps of wild flowers in bloom. The Waratahs out at the moment with quite a few right next to the track. Plenty of Scoparia putting on a good show as well. You can also see plenty of the endemic Ben Lomond Cushionplant. Allow a bit longer than the 1.5 hours each way from Car Villa if you take a camera.
