Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station and photograph the GZ.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Hay... a painted water tower trig! We've found a lot of painted silos and water towers on this roadtrip that we didn't know existed. We haven't been to Hay for about 45 years so it's not surprising it's changed.

Day 3 in our road trip west, we woke up in Hay this morning and the weather was finally starting to clear, we were long over due for getting someone of our gear and tent back to its regular dry and comfortable state. A lovely but very flat part of the world
Love all these silo art sites, and I am sure they are getting better as we go.

When I heard that TemoGeoDad (TGD) and Geomum (GM) was heading to Hay, I decided on asking if I could catch a lift so I could go Geocaching around the area. Unfortunately, TGD missed out on finding these caches as he was going to Hay for other reasons. So, after they dropped themselves off, I was given the car keys and headed off for the day of caching. I started the day by finding the caches on the outskirts of town and then I headed back to Hay to find the central ones. I also visited many of the unique locations that Hay has to offer. Out of the possible 15 finds, I made 14. I couldn’t find the last one because muggles were around GZ all day playing cricket. Anyway, I enjoyed my day out and soon it was time to pick up TGD and GM, so we could head home. TB visit and all caches were in good condition. A big thanks to the CO for adding this cache to game for the Geocaching community to enjoy. Big Grin TFTC! Big Grin

I loved this silo art and trig. They have turned it into a historic site too. A quick photo and after a read of the plaques it was time to head off to the next one. Thanks for bringing me here. Big Grin

I was on the tail-end of 5 weeks holiday, with two weeks being a hurried trip to Adelaide for a Theatre Nurses Conference, and now on my way back home. I had stopped in at Hay on my way through, but had forgotten to check for Trig Points, so after staying over just out of town I came and got an early morning zoomed photo of the Trig mast and vanes.

Logging trig points on the tops of water towers and grain silos is certainly much less demanding that logging the vast majority of trig points in Tasmania where a significant climb up a hill or mountian is required before a find can be claimed. Whilst we feel a little uncertain about claiming these finds, we accept that this method is the accepted convention north of Bass Strait for trig points on elevated structures. TFTC

23-Dec-11
A chance to break the drive and grab a few caches (not that there are many out this way).

A cache, a cuppa and then the trig.

27-Sep-10
One of those water tank trigs that I saw so many of on the way to Adelaide.
It got to the point where if I even suggested a stop I could have been bundled out of the car and left behind.

We spent the night in Hay and did a few family thing before visiting the old gaol them off to Mildura.
