Description

The missing trig on a lost hill!

Weetangerra ::595m::

A reminant trig station shown on: Federal Territory Feature Map 1915, Tourist Map of the Australian Capital Territory 1962 and the current topographic map Hall 8727-4S 2003.

The master control (MC) marker still survives to be found but the quadrapod is gone only the depressions of the footings are visble when the grass is short.

The trig is not in the suburb of Weetangerra but Latham. This district of the ACT was originaly known as Weetangera, bounded by Ginninderra Creek, Murrumbidgee River and Molonglo River.
Access is off Pohlman Street.

This is one of the few hill top trigs in Canberra that has been built out. There is a suburban open space running along the top of the ridge northwest to Ginnenderra Creek. There is a cycle path running near by, a play ground for the trig kids and some historic locations nearby.

CRANLEIGH HOMESTEAD SITE - GA1762

Home of General Legge. General during WWI, served Boer War, Comandant RMC, local pig farmer.

WEETANGERA SCHOOL HOUSE - GA2489
S35° 14.655 E149°02.869
First Weetangera school built 1875, school on this site built 1907. Demolished about 1968, the time the suburb was built.

A section of the map “Tourist Map of the Australian Capital Territory1962” showing the trig stations Charnwood, Pine Ridge, Crace, Black Mountain, Mount Painter and Weetangera.

It doesn’t have it’s own quadrapod so I brought my own.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

12-Oct-18
ok... just been to see my psychologist not far from here, felt like some caching therapy, figured it was time to find any GA caches nearby so I looked on tge map in the app... a trig? here?... ok
Oh cool - not often I do a drive by trig, but if i am going to do a trig I don't have to walk up a hill to, that doesn't have much of a view - then this dull grey day was probably a good day to do it ... but now i had better go get the GC cache I had planned to do on my way home.

24-Jun-18
is it really a trig?

08-Apr-18
Found on a cache run in the area.

27-Jan-17
I came out to find this trig today for points in the SSH and have been fascinated by the map on this cache page. My husband's family has been in the Canberra region for generations and we love to check out the old maps of Canberra and imagine how it must have been in the past. Cool to finally get this cache - thanks a lot Smile

10-Jul-16

20-Jul-15
Found approximately 10:08pm. I was out an about caching with a geobuddy. I wanted to grab a GCA trig for the day and this one was a good one, it seemed. Additionally it hasn't been visited by a cacher for a while so its been loved again.. I was surprised by the easy access though.

06-Jan-14
Out and about in the area, what hill?

21-Nov-13
We came across the Weetangera Trig Point whilst caching in this part of the ACT.

07-Apr-13
#GA14 - 18:30; Another I visited last week, but photographed the wrong thing, so returned tonight for the correct picture to enable me to log the find. Interesting how the area has grown since this trig point was established, and it's one of the older parts of the Belconnen area. TFTC Very Happy

05-Mar-13
Now this was an easy trig to find, but still very interesting. TFTC.

09-Nov-12
Drive by!

23-Oct-11
Found while out caching with mtrax - was surprised at how easy this was - although we did take our photo of the survey point because that was easier - got some interesting shadows...

23-Oct-11
While in Belco with Tealby saw this one when doing the nearby cache, so took the short walk (100m) to the area.

19-Jun-11
Found today after a morning of caching. Strange, but cool trig. Thanks. Razz

05-Jun-11
am really a fan of trigs that i dont have to leave the car for..i mean, i didnt even have to leave the car! I love it!

After realizing that "OHC***EVERYWHEREISPRATICALLYCLOSEDFORTHEROOCULL!", i had to settle on a driveby trig instead.

It had it's issues of a normal one.
After realizing that yes, even through it may be called Weetangera, it really isnt located IN weetangera (It's my own fault, i only half read the listings, and drove around the suburb for a good 15 minutes..)

05-May-11
Surprised at how close we could get the geomobile....a strange variation of trig marker, but interesting nevertheless. TFTT Smile

03-Apr-11
Found this one in the early morning light. Not what we are used to seeing but perhaps trigs are a bit different in the ACT. I have seen these before when we were here.

11-Feb-11
With a GC cache nearyby this was a simple matter of a short walk. How many of these types of trigs are there around the ACT?

03-Feb-11
GCA 28 - 3476 - A run around this afternoon doing some GC and GCA caches..

So close to the previous cache I had to stop for the photo and the find.

TFTC !!

07-Jan-11
Found on an easy morning of caching around these north western suburbs. We're a bit confused and had a response a bit like Tankengine's below. Why does this set of yellow posts qualify as a trig when others don't? Anyway, we're tarts for a find so we will take it, and I enjoyed the history in the description. Thanks.

31-Oct-10
It is about time I go get this trig as only live one suburb away. One of the more easier trig points I have managed to get to. Photo to be uploaded tonight.

An easy find. Didn't seem quite right to drive up to a trig point, normally a bit of a walk/effort involved Wink Thanks.

20-Oct-10
A quick grab on the way to work.

12-Sep-10
Last cache for the day today and this was a nice easy trig to get to Clapping

29-Aug-10
Found with McPhan. He takes crap photos. LOL.

29-Aug-10
125. We had just completed a GC puzzle and walked over to this one as it was only 120 metres away. Easy peasy (and yes I just gave myself an uppercut.)

TFTC and the mixed suburbs - Weetangera/Latham/Scullin.

20-Aug-10
It was the nicest day of the week, but even at lunchtime it was freezing in the wind. But I had to make the effort and get a couple of finds. I pulled up, snapped a quick pic with the iphone then back to the heated comfort of the car.

I've seen all sorts of things that pass for trigs but this would have to be one of the more minimalist versions Ive seen.

20-Aug-10
nice easy find. wanted to check out the old school house site but my hubby was complaining about the cold wind and ice =(. so go a photo and headed off.
2nd find ever =)

14-Aug-10
Found with SecretSquirrel-BJC.

An easy "Claytons" TP

14-Aug-10
124+2000=2124 with Captain Tomato

Interesting but "once was a trig"

14-Aug-10
Still wondering if this should be logged as a TP.
But I guess it WAS there, and now it's in the past, in history.

12-Aug-10
Well, I am not sure if this qualifies as a trig… Other than the survey posts, there is nothing left! There are VERY many of such survey markers in the ACT – I would shudder if they all became “Trigs” all of a sudden… I spent a lot of time (and much energy climbing hills) searching for unpublished ACT trigs at the beginning of this year! There are many marked on the older maps! In my travels, (and to my disappointment) I found a lot of sites like this! – But I did not publish them as trigs… Only when a trig station was present, did I publish it. None-the-less, thanks for the cache.

08-Aug-10
Was in the vicinity today, so stopped by for what promised to be a vary arduous climb Very Happy - just kidding, not often that a Trig is a drive-by, but always glad when they are!!!

07-Aug-10
Found this trig today and can say, not much to it, not even a name TFTC

07-Aug-10
Not much of this one left. At least there is a bit of park here. Albida.

04-Aug-10
I visit this 'trig' today.... It's pretty rare to see a trig built out, the other one I recall is Palmer Trigonometrical Station.

31-Jul-10
So, how many times have I ridden right past here and didn't even know???

Bolt in concrete found. "Trig" found.

28-Jul-10
Having found it I now have to log it.

Upload pictures GGgrrrrr!
