Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ. I discovered this one while visiting the Breakaways. The coordinates are approximate as I didnt want to leave the track and was a little constrained by time - I didnt realise this trig hadnt been listed, so didnt realise I would need more accurate coordinates.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

#GA1470 - 12:20; Day 10 of the Alice Mega Road Trip with Sol de lune and albida33. After a night at Glendambo, we were now headed for Kulgera in the NT for our next overnighter. We cached along the Stuart Highway, as well as around Coober Pedy and Marla as we travelled towards the border. We had passed through Coober Pedy and taken a detour in to see The Breakaways, stopping off for this trig on the way. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

What a great spot...The Breakaways. Grabbed this trig on the way in.

I found this about 237 metres from listed co-ordinate’s – I found this odd as most trigs are down to the metre – in any case enjoyed the trip out.

Quite an adventure getting to this one!! The edges of the road were very soft but we managed to get the campervan over them so we could park off the road. Then we hit some soft stuff and the fun began! It was quite hairy until we hit some harder stuff. Thanks, I think.

On my way to The Breakaways, I could see this trig point not too far off the road.
Time for a stroll across the scenery Very Happy

About a five minute stroll, actually Smile

The views from the trig are superb in every direction, so it is well worth the leg stretch.

A big day from Coober Pedy to Alice Springs with a few stops along the way.

A little chilly and blowy this morning.

We were visiting Coober Pedy and went for a bit of a drive to check out the Breakaways, which is when I spotted this Trig. The iphone photo is a bit blurry, but you can just make out the marker.

Cheers
