Description

Obelisk TS3597R

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Obelisk.

Serial number is: TS3597R.

Last Inspected on: No Data.

Elevation is: 80 metres

Constructed: c. 1809

Passive Trig Station, this is a sandstone obelisk built from large blocks. The NSW Heritage Office inventory listing of the obelisk includes the following historical notes:

The development and use of North Head has been influenced by its relative isolation from Sydney and its physical environment. This isolation slowed development of the area, although by 1810, the first land grants had been made to Richard Cheers and Gilbert Baker. A navigational obelisk was erected on the western side of North Head c.1809 to assist in navigating the entrance channels to the port. North Head was the first safe anchorage in Port Jackson.

A nice walk around on a warmish day – this 1 turned out to be the hardest trig - was unable to take any tracks to get close to it – all were blocked off – so took a distance shot of it - nice to complete – thanks

I went to the wall and path everyone was talking about only to find that it has been blocked off by a large fence with very explicit signs explaining not to go further. Apparently there are also cameras there now too. Ah well. Thankfully plenty of other sights nearby.

We were staying at the Q Station for the weekend, so I just had to check out these trigs. A nice little wander and some great views. This is a very different and interesting trig

#GA953 - 10:55; I was back in the big smoke with the geohoney for an annual celebration which just happens to coincide with the Vivid Festival. We were staying at the nearby accommodation, so I took an early morning stroll and collected the three nearby trigs. After checking out, we headed down towards this trig and decided to grab breakfast at the lovely little cafe close by. After a feed, it was a short stroll over the road and down along the old wall to get a snap of this lovely old structure. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

I love a bit of history so I thought I would revisit North Head. The last time I was here would have been in the early 1980's and things certainty have changed. I to went down the wrong side of the wall but found the gap crossed over and went back. Amazing structure, some of the sandstone is starting to weather but it still looks very solid. TFTT.

A great monument.

Easy walk down - about 130m on the northern side of the wall which has been cleared as Zalgariath said.

This thing blows me away! What a fantastic structure hidden away in the bush. I might add a bit of history to the description if the librarian at Manly Library can unearth anything for me.[Edit: I added some historical information I found on the NSW Heritage Office web site. The obelisk is even older than I thought.]

Found at 4:24 pm.

We headed to North Head today to pick up this series of trigs - 6 in all. We'd been here a couple of years ago to see if we could spot any, this was before the publishing of all these additional trigs, but didn't spot anything. No wonder. Even this monster is well concealed although we saw it from the lookout. We parked uphill from the cafe (free parking and walked to four of the trigs. We followed this nasty old wall with its broken glass on the wrong side until there was a break and came up the other side to the obelisk. Amazing something so big and historical has no track to it or any information about it. Carved in graffiti was present from 1918 and earlier. Even the "spray paint" was actually tar painted on from the same era. Very interesting find. We were only 3TF?

Well not sure how roger got here but things are a lot easier now! I followed the wall which has had 3m of brush cleared from it to within 20m of the obelisk which is easily photoed and approached Smile Will update the listening and as photos when I get home Wink

I really had no idea what to expect here, I tried from the track along the sandstone wall and thought to hop over the wall at the right spot. No chance the wall is still well over 6 feet high and the top well covered with broken glass.
I had to try from the road and bush bash my way to the trig, very heavy going and almost gave up. In the end I was standing right next to this monster and still could not see it, I only caught a glimpse of the tip of the obelisk thru a break in the canopy.
Amazing structure well over 10 metres tall not sure what keeps it standing!
