Passive Trig Station, this is a sandstone obelisk built from large blocks. The NSW Heritage Office inventory listing of the obelisk includes the following historical notes:
The development and use of North Head has been influenced by its relative isolation from Sydney and its physical environment. This isolation slowed development of the area, although by 1810, the first land grants had been made to Richard Cheers and Gilbert Baker. A navigational obelisk was erected on the western side of North Head c.1809 to assist in navigating the entrance channels to the port. North Head was the first safe anchorage in Port Jackson.
Logs
This thing blows me away! What a fantastic structure hidden away in the bush. I might add a bit of history to the description if the librarian at Manly Library can unearth anything for me.[Edit: I added some historical information I found on the NSW Heritage Office web site. The obelisk is even older than I thought.]
Found at 4:24 pm.
I had to try from the road and bush bash my way to the trig, very heavy going and almost gave up. In the end I was standing right next to this monster and still could not see it, I only caught a glimpse of the tip of the obelisk thru a break in the canopy.
Amazing structure well over 10 metres tall not sure what keeps it standing!
