Description

Base Richmond South TS781

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Base Richmond South.

Serial number is: TS781.

Last Inspected on: November 6, 2008.

Elevation is: 32 metres.

A stone and concrete base where a possible mast may have stood. A name plate is also on the base and is legible to read.  This was vacant land at the time of last inspection owned by Department of Housing.

It is interesting to note that somewhere along the line somebody made a mistake with the name, but who is right is now impossible to say! The Lands Department data list this Trig as "Richmond Base South" but the name plaque reads "Base Richmond South". It seems most likely that the engraver made a mistake but since the plaque is what everybody will see it is best to keep that name.

Today I travelled north to hunt down some Challenge caches for my personal GC challenge. I am now following a series of trig caches home. This was the first so big thanks to Geocaching Australia for publishing these trigs.

Out trigging with Sophoutloud today on a mission to take over Penrith. It was a beautiful warm day and we were surprised how many of these trigs had survived the urban expansion of Penrith. They were all found in varying conditions from as perfect as the day they were built to pretty broken and covered in graffiti. Pretty easy to access here but pretty muddy and take care as there is lots of rubbish, waste metal and broken glass around, cool old base mark. Clan Minotaur

Cool to find a base, one of the originals. Collected this find on our way home to find a bunch in the penrith area today. Let’s see what we can do. A bit sad to see all the rubbish in the area. Why do people feel like this is ok

5th & last 1 for a short run around the area – this is a drive by trig to complete well in the dry that is, I wouldn’t drive to GZ in the wet, I think they call this area the drop zone well I think. Anyway, all I now they come here when its wet & they have all that fun if you call that, anyway easy going in the dry just got to keep the wheels out of the deep ruts. The last 15 to 20 metres to trig got me going as the bush scrub is getting a little thick – so as they say must arrive to GZ to see trig. That’s why its got its identification plate as it is unable to be seen unless you arrive to GZ.
Yep the 5th & last 1 completed & a good way to finish it off as it was starting to heat up for the day and it was starting to be a sweet a thong. Thanks for showing

Trig can only be seen when almost upon it. Road is easily drivable, at least in the dry, for cars with reasonable clearance. TFTC.

Met up with Lucky1955 to do a few caches today. Nice walk in along a good path, few large puddles but we were able to get around them.

Teamed up with Celtical and made the trek to GZ.
Access can be gained from one of two directions and the first one we picked was too wet to follow so we relocated to the other access point. At least on this path we could avoid or move around the puddles. At GZ we each took out happy snaps of being there.

Wasn't sure if I should swim or try and walk to this one. Wow, lots of water lying around. However, managed to there and soon had my happy snap.

TFTT. Got my shoes muddy and my legs a little scratched, but got the prize.

For some unknown reason it was in mind this was an inground trig, and that is what was sought ... on driving part way along the track and stopped by rubbish, and on foot a muddy wide bog to traverse, it was with much surprise to part some bushes and behold the Base Richmond South solid trig base. Wow, that is not going anywhere in a hurry ... sad to see all the fittings gone bar, woohoo, the clear engraved nameplate.

0710 Spot on coordinates. Wasn't too keen on heading into unknown bush, but I probably could have, as I ended up annoying a local dog just by having the car parked there.
Nice simple track, but I could see no trig until about 10 m away from the BASE of the trig. I had been wondering about the name, as it is nowhere near Richmond (RAAF) Base!!
Took a couple of photos on a spare camera.

First find on a quick morning cache trip around the Hawkesbury. We parked on the road & had an easy 200m walk through the bush. We spotted the trig from about 20m away.

A nice little wlk in bushland for a hidden find. I couldn't see it from 15m away!?!

This was the first Trig find for the day with pjmpjm, we knew this one was there has it had been found the previous day by Hoogies.

The turn off the main road was quickly found and we started driving down the track almost to GZ. A short search later and the Trig was found well not much of a challenge as it is rather large. The base is quite unusual due to its size and shape however there is no doubt as the name plaque is still in place with the Trig plug dead center as well.

The mast and vanes have long gone but the remains are well worth the trip, beside since this land is owned by the Department of Housing it is only a matter of time before is is built on.

This was the first trig of the day for rogerw3 and myself, as we continued in our efforts to 'clean up' the new trigs recently re-discovered in the area north of Penrith.

Turning off on a muddy track, we found that we could drive the AWD GeoBuru2 almost all the way to GZ. Some the of puddles were very deep, though, and I recommend that others with 2WD vehicles walk the 200 metres plus from the road.

Sadly, this scrubby and wet area isn't far from where human remains were found recently (off Devlin Road) and when leaving we unexpectedly passed the roadside police headquarters for the extensive forensic work that's being undertaken. (However, the trig is located nearly 2 kms distant from this tragic site.)

As FTFer Hoogies has reported, the post and vanes have long gone from the TS. However, to our pleasant surprise, we found the official name plaque was still in place, as was the official location pin.

A great find and quite enjoyable.

Many thanks to rogerw3 for his research that led to his publishing this one.

'Three Thumbs Up' for the name plate and location pin.

This was a good FTF! No mast was there but a trig base was a very good find. A bit away from the fire trail, a small scrub bash to find the base, with a name plate on the base. A happy find for me today!
