Description

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Travel south on Blythe road past Upper Natone Reserve turning east at S41 18.620 E145 50.878 into Black Creek Road(sign

posted), continue to S41 18.262 E145 53.719 where pink tape marks the track start.

Track is well marked with predominantly  pink tape and with yellow and orange tape as well.

Originally a wooden survey beacon was placed above the survey mark but has since succumbed to mother nature.

After doing the caches on Loyetea Peak we headed over to this one approaching straight from Loyetea via Loyetea and Dispute Roads. At some point in the last couple of years the roads have been fixed up and they are in very good condition. The only possible issue for a 2WD may possibly be the concrete ford shortly after you start on Dispute Rd. It's been fixed up but there is a bit of a hump. No problems for any sort of SUV. We soon reached the track head and headed up the track to the trig. Track is well taped and easy to follow.

Today we decided to find a few caches on the North West Coast and this was one of them. We first tackled the cache from the directions given on the cache page but due to the floods at the second way point the bridge after here has been washed away. We then headed back out to South Riana and Loyeta. On our approach to the cache the concrete ford was partly washed out but with a bit of road building we managed to cross the ford. We then navigated our way to the final way point where we found the track markers, spot on co-ords. Mrs "T" waited in the car while Mr "T" packed the back pack and headed up into the mist of the mountain. The track was very slippery but onward and upward I went, to my surprise I had 3 slight down hills. The track is in good condition, some tree branches have been blown down but the tape markers made the challenge easy. The view was not good but really enjoyed the trek up to collect 2 smilies for the day. Took some not so great pics and headed back down in the rain, but all went well, took a total of 1 hour up and down, Mrs "T" happy to see me back again!! Overall an excellent day out!

A fantastic short walk in winter!! Been wanting to do this one for ages. Great view on top with the bonus of picking up two caches in the one spot.

This cache has been on our radar for sometime but we had not made the commitment to tackle it. Recent maintenance of an earlier cache by Sirius Tas, his work on the track and the listing of this trig point lifted this cache to a "must do soon" status. We explored the area a couple of weeks ago to see if we could get through from Loyetea - you could if you had a very high clearance tank-like 4WD as it is very rough and narrow in places. Hence, access to the start of the trail as described by Sirius is by far the best option although you do need to take it slowly in places as the road is very rough but driveable. Although it wasn't a long walk (488m from the road) we found sections quite taxing, especially the rock scrambles. The advantage is that much of the track is under the tree canopy and so we were sheltered from the hot sun. After about 70 minutes we completed the last rock scramble and got to the top and were greeted by magnificent 360 degree views. Mount Housetop is not that high but is does give a commanding view of the surrounding area. We located the trig marker first and took the required photo. We then found the close-by cache. After spending a few minutes at the top we decided to head down as it was very hot on the exposed rock. It was much easier going down and it took us 40 minutes to get back to the car. In all, a two hour round trip. We really appreciated the work done by Sirius Tas to make the top of Mount Housetop more accessible - plenty of added pink tape made the trail much easier to follow and the track clearing (bush must tremble when it sees Sirius coming with his machete!!!) made walking so much easier. Thanks Sirius Tas for the cache and for the work you have done - top marks!
