This cache has been on our radar for sometime but we had not made the commitment to tackle it. Recent maintenance of an earlier cache by Sirius Tas, his work on the track and the listing of this trig point lifted this cache to a "must do soon" status. We explored the area a couple of weeks ago to see if we could get through from Loyetea - you could if you had a very high clearance tank-like 4WD as it is very rough and narrow in places. Hence, access to the start of the trail as described by Sirius is by far the best option although you do need to take it slowly in places as the road is very rough but driveable. Although it wasn't a long walk (488m from the road) we found sections quite taxing, especially the rock scrambles. The advantage is that much of the track is under the tree canopy and so we were sheltered from the hot sun. After about 70 minutes we completed the last rock scramble and got to the top and were greeted by magnificent 360 degree views. Mount Housetop is not that high but is does give a commanding view of the surrounding area. We located the trig marker first and took the required photo. We then found the close-by cache. After spending a few minutes at the top we decided to head down as it was very hot on the exposed rock. It was much easier going down and it took us 40 minutes to get back to the car. In all, a two hour round trip. We really appreciated the work done by Sirius Tas to make the top of Mount Housetop more accessible - plenty of added pink tape made the trail much easier to follow and the track clearing (bush must tremble when it sees Sirius coming with his machete!!!) made walking so much easier. Thanks Sirius Tas for the cache and for the work you have done - top marks!
