Description

A very steep climb

Official name of this trigpoint as per Land Information New Zealand is Paritutu NO 2 with a geodetic code of A7DX.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ. This one can be seen for miles around, but getting to it is the challenge.

You can park about 160 metres away but from there it is a 100 metre vertical ascent almost in a straight line. There are steps the first half, then it involves hanging on to a chain while finding footholds to ascend the last section, so only attempt if you are physically fit, have good footwear and the weather is good. Being NZ they trust people to take responsibility for their own actions rather than putting up lots of warning signs at safety barriers, so it is up to you whether you make the attempt. Once at GZ the view is worth it though.

Found (17:14) with a huge climb Very Happy but so worth it for that view, now only if Mt. Taranaki would show itself could it have been topped!!

I am over from Australia visiting my sister for a week before the mega event. Well I just knew as soon as I saw the rock that if it was climable there would have to be a cache there, and of course on checking my database there it was. My sister had climbed it once before so I knew what to expect, but yesterday afternoon when I was driving up 2 fire engines came down the hill, and at the parking area were 3 police cars and an ambulance. So figuring something might be going on I thought it might not be the best time to add to their problems, though I guess emergency services would have been on hand if needed.

Returned this morning to see a French guy who had just come down turn around to re-ascent. He had already done 6 trips up and down and managed a couple more before leaving. Now that's dedication (or being too cheap to pay for a gym). Anyway I made my way, using a technique I have learned in a career that involved roof access and tower climbs - just concentrate on the task at hand and what you have to do next rather than looking around and admiring the view - and seeing where you actually are. In fact it wasn't that bad and I was soon at the top enjoying the view.

Definitely worth the climb up if you are fit enough to do it and the weather is good, it would be nasty if wet or windy.
