Logs for ZombieDragonfly
04-May-15
We were hoping for sun today. 16 days in Australia and we hadn't seen anything better than partly cloudy.
Well at least today it didn't rain!
We did a hike today from the zoo to the Spit. This was one of two geocaches we nabbed along the way.
Pretty easy find, especially given the hint. We re-hid as best we could to match the hint. It's certainly not visible from the trail, but unless covered with detritus (which we did) it's pretty easy to spot once you take that step off the trail.
TN, left a glow-in-the-dark zombie and a dragonfly charm.
Also dropped a TB.

A funny thing happened on the way to the cache...
We ran into the CO's mother... well to be truthful, she ran into us. We'd just finished following the hint (repeatedly as it turns out) and had the cache in hand. We were doing the logging, trading thing when she drops by. Usually in these sorts of situations we just tell the muggle what we're doing and (hopefully) convert them to geocachers. In this case she says: "That's my son's cache."
How fun!
We had a lovely chat and, in addition to dropping our usual into the cache (a zombie cheerleader and dragonfly charm in this case, plus a TB), we passed along a zombie path tag for the CO.
Today we walked from the ferry landing at the zoo all the way to The Spit. This was the second and final cache of the day for us. We'd have done more but were pressed for time, considering the length of our little hike.
We're going to give this one a favorite for the overall experience.

Visiting from California, we got a later start than we wanted to this morning, but that still had us up here at Palm Beach by noon (we took the bus from Sydney). Had a nice lunch at the local eatery next to the golf course, then set about to do the loop up by the lighthouse.
Alas the west side of the loop trail is closed for maintenance so we were down to but a single cache to search for and this was the one!
The day was gray, drizzly, and threatening rain the entire time, but we managed to escape most of it. On the bright side, one supposes, the weather helped keep the crowd/muggles down compared to a perfect sunny day.
It took us about 10 minutes to find the thing -- we thought it was hidden pretty well, once discovered and not as easy as some other cachers logs might indicate. In fact The Zombie made the find by seeing the container from about 5 meters away through a little "tunnel" of sorts. Once spotted, figuring out how to make the nab wasn't terribly difficult -- though it did involve a bit of scrambling.
We dropped off a zombie hobo, a dragonfly charm, and a TB. We picked up a TB to move along. We also cleaned out a lot of trashy stuff from the container (who puts that sort of nonsense into cache containers!) Grrr.
In any event, it was an adventurous day we thoroughly enjoyed. We wish we could have had better views (the clouds pretty much obscured most of the distant views), but hey, even a bad day geocaching beats a good day working, right?

Nearing the end of two weeks in Australia and it seems like we've been following the rain the entire time (or is it the rain has been following us?).
We started here in Sydney two weeks ago and were here for the "Storm of the Century" (which upon further research we found out happens about every 3-5 years, lol).
We went to Melbourne -- rain followed us there.
We went to Brisbane -- rain followed us there. In fact we almost didn't make it back to Sydney last night as the Brisbane airport was all but closed.
In any event, back in Sydney for 3 days of Holiday. Today walking the Botanic Gardens and The Domain. We took a minor side trip to get this cache and not a couple of hundred meters after we started back to your hotel, the rains let loose again.
It's been an adventure, that's for sure!
Easy find if you've been geocaching a while, but back in our early days, this one might have taken us 10 minutes or so.
The log is down to a couple of pages left but, other than that, the cache is in good condition.

Relatively quiet on the trail today so the nab was pretty each without having to have muggle fears.
On the other hand, we'd taken about 20 steps away from GZ after making the grab and realized we had the code for the final with us. D'OH! Back to the cache to put the code back!
This is our first cache in Queensland and in this trip Down Under from California, this now makes our third state in Australia! Not bad for a week here.
TN, left a zombie doctor and a dragonfly charm.
Also dropped a TB.
[Note: We mistakenly signed the log the 28th of April, but we were here on the 29th. Sigh.]

We sort of a long loop up and dow the river from our hotel today (close to 15km all told). Although we only nabbed two caches (this being the second) it was a grand hike. We managed to make it back to the hotel mere minutes before rain came through so all in all... a good day!
Signed the log "TZD" to save on log space.

Nabbed this one on our way out of an entertaining saunter through the market.
We agree with some previous cachers' notes in that:
1. Tweezers are very helpful and...
2. We were immediately struck with: "How has this one not been muggled?"
In any event, as we're not sure whether this cache is where it's supposed to be, we put it back exactly where we found it.
TFTC (and giving us visiting Yanks from the States our second Australian state!).

Second and final cache of an awesome day here in Sydney and Manly.
This cache The Zombie went off our planned trail a few feet to find. Terrific camo! Won't be noticed by passing muggles, but most geocachers would figure it out pretty quickly.
TN, left a zombie clown and a dragonfly charm.
Also left a TB (which is in a race so keep moving it along!) to move along.

What a day. From a glorious red/orange sunrise at Circular Quay to a hail storm upon our return to Circular Quay at the end of the day.
And in between, a great hike out from Manly Harbour to the Bella Vista Cafe and back where we met a very young JettRocker cache at this very GZ, then had a lovely talk over lunch with a lovely retired couple (muggles, but the conversation was awesome).
We TN, left a zombie bellhop and a dragonfly charm and a TB to move along.
Great hike with great views.

Not too many muggles about this morning and we were, indeed, taking a nice walk in the park!
Visiting here on a combination business/holiday trip and got out early this AM to walk the park in a relatively uncrowded state, nab a few caches, see a few sights... You get the idea.
This is our first cache in Australia so that's a nice milestone!
TNLN.
The log papers need to be cleaned up. It looks like the original has filled up and previous cachers have been nice enough to add new paper, but it's getting a bit... crowded in the container.
We may have signed the log incorrectly dated the 23rd, but we were her and logged it on the 24th.

It's always nice to find a cache intact and where it's supposed to be after a couple of previous DNF logs!
We were hear pretty early in the morning before the park got too crowded. It was awesome. The path to GZ has a pretty clear geotrail so that helped. The hint also helped a lot.
The Zombie made the trek up the hill and "into the rocks" while The Dragonfly stayed below taking photos of this and that.
Our second cache in Australia!
TN, left a zombie housewife and a dragonfly charm.

Requisite email to CO sent.
We took an early morning walk through the park. Even though it was still pretty early, by the time we arrived at Mrs. Macquarie's Chair there was quite the crowd. We were pressed into service taking photos of other tourists and, interestingly enough, having ourselves photographed with said tourists.
In any event, what a lovely spot. We can only imagine how much more serene it would have been here in years gone by before all the hustle and bustle of cars, diesel powered boats, etc.

Not too difficult a time crossing for us today. But even so, you certainly have to keep an eye on the traffic as it really whizzes by here.
Pretty easy nab and sign. We should let the CO know, the lid is missing and we found no pencil inside. Fortunately we *always* carry a (very special) writing implement with us so it wasn't a problem.
The interesting thing is, with the severe storm which passed through here earlier this week, and with the container missing its lid, you'd think the log might be soaked, or at least damp. Nope. It was dry as a bone.
So... nice protective placement, evidently!
We likely mis-signed the date on the log, signing 23/4 when, in fact, we were here on 24/4 and will log it online that way.

Well I guess we didn't realize what we were getting ourselves into...
We got to stage 1, collected all the relevant info, calculated the coordinates for stage 2 and... wham... it's a long way away.
D'OH!
Well, since we're visiting from out of country and don't have a car, this one will have to go on our "If we can get to it, we'll do it list."

Well for starters... Email sent to CO.
I (The Zombie) have been here for the last couple of days visiting on business from Northern California. I spotted this cache before coming out here and, initially at least, my interest was piqued as this cache fills in a Jasmer month for Team ZombieDragonfly.
Stage 1 was accomplished a couple of days ago (Wednesday the 1st), the numbers recorded, the translation done and the coordinate of the final determined. Being on foot, there was no way I was going to go for the final on Wednesday as I'd already logged six hiking miles up and down the National Mall.
Fast-forward to today (Friday). Work finished a bit early and I had scoped out a ride on the Metro to save some walking. Once I got out the front door of the hotel I thought, "Oh what the hey, let's walk it." So, another almost seven miles to and fro. So, in addition to another Jasmer month, seeing a couple of monuments I would not have otherwise seen, I managed to burn quite a few calories in the pursuit of this virtual.
The weather we near perfect, the Mall wonderful (particularly at and after sunset). All in all a very nice excuse to get out and put in a bunch of miles.
