Description

Fancy a walk to picture perfect hut on the northern edge of the Central Plateau?

The current Lady Lake Hut built early this century replaces the original hut built early last century but sadly lost in a bushfire in the 1960’s. The Mountain Huts Preservation Society should be congratulated for rebuilding this hut and encouraging more  people to visit this beautiful part of the World Heritage Area. Access to the hut is via the Higgs track originally cut in the 1870s as a droving route between the plateau and the river plains.

The current Higgs track starts from a small car park at the end of a signposted spur off the Westrope Road.  Westrope Junction is S 41 40.011 E 146 28.474 The Higgs Track carpark spur is not far along the DaleBrook Track is approx S 41 40.017 E 146 28.375. Westrope Road terminates onto C168 and the CEyrettes strongly recommend going through Chudleigh to join the B12 because of the Honey Factory icecreams……

The Higgs track crosses a couple of small bridges before commencing the climb to the plateau, a relentless 2 km climb that steepens as you get tireder….. You will be very close to the cache My Fair Lady when the plateau edge is reached and the hut can be seen across the creek flats.

The hut is small and unheated except for a methylated spirits stove. There is no power so the three candle holders are welcome to create the cabin atmosphere that the CEyrettes love. There appears to be no method of booking the hut so be prepared to either share the hut or bring your own tents to sleep in. Make sure that the hut door is firmly closed when leaving so wildlife does not enter.

The toilet is some distance to the East of the hut and is not signposted. Try S 41 40.607 E 146 26.829. The view from the toilet door is truly inspirational…….bring your own toilet paper.

This large cache, Lady Lake, is at the edge of the  sub alpine Central Plateau area surrounded by considerable drops. Be prepared for severe inclement weather at all times of the year and take extreme care if icy conditions are encountered. Take enough provisions to cater for an unexpected overnight stay as the weather can deteriorate with startling suddenness. Have an evacuation plan in case of injury, illness or snake/spider bite. An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is recommended and always tell a responsible person where you are going and your expected time of return.  Phone reception is fair at the cache site.

To log this cache you will need to enter the very large cache container (which is about the size of a hut that sleeps 7) and log your visit in the logbook  using your CACHER NAME, photograph your entry and add the photo to the gallery of this cache. Since the caches container is in such a pretty place you may want to add a few more images of the local scenery, the lake, sunset or rise, vegetation, wildlife, or the members of your party.

Enjoy your trip to Lady Lake Hut.

A group of us decided to do this walk and stay at the hut overnight - after the hard slog up, just about everyone went "WOW" when we hit the top. Bloody cold, but we were prepared for it. I will be up there again to do the entire Higgs Track soon. TFTVC.

Gorgeous day for a walk yesterday when we went up to check this area out. Lovely little hut to bring a group to but not a lot of space for tents should the hut be full when you get there given the terrain.
Loved the views!

Just noticed that we "Have still to find.." this cache. That's not right. We had a meal in the cache container a while back. Quick check revealed that I'd forgotten to log it.
Never mind, soon put that right! Very Happy

Wow, what a beautiful place! Having done most of the other caches in the nearby Western Tiers, I was looking forward to visiting this area, and an event here was a great opportunity to do these caches. Love this whole area, it reminded us of our trek up Ironstone Mountain a couple of years ago when we stayed in Norm's Shack, which was very cosy, but this hut at Lady Lake was far more beautifully built. We camped at the hut in our tent outside, so we didn't have to hear the snoring... Razz

The logbook was indeed very full, even the back page, but I found a blank space a few pages back under nutwood's and an entry from 2007. Signed while sitting on the deck as dusk was falling in gorgeous pastel colours over the plateau. Fantasic. What a wonderful experience. Thanks so much for the Magic Meal event and this bonus cache!

Found it, and then had to find somewhere to write. Being early, tehre was still space on the back cover, so we took advantage of that. Sorry we didn't think to bring a new logbook (can see what will happen next - there will be 6 new books in the hut!!) At the risk of repeating ourselves, it was a great day up here!

My entry into the hut log was made during the Magic Meal on the Mountain but as with many others, I had to go searching for a page with a small section blank to record my visit. An absolutely wonderful place to visit, even though the temperature was around 25 degrees (unheard of in these parts), it will still be great in colder weather.
Thanks CarrollEyre for a double find today

This seems to be a bonus cache for attending the Magic Meal on the Mountain event! So that's great. It was a wonderful day there, enjoying the incredible meal, the excellent company, the amazing weather and the beautiful scenery. That hut is great. I made the most of it by staying so that I could do some more of the nearby caches. This was the first time I've done an overnight camp in well over 10 years. And I loved everything about it! Great way to do the cache, too. Thanks Carrolleyres.

Signed my name in the log book while attending the Magic Meal on a Mountain event. I absolutely love Lady Lake. Ive eaten a 3 course meal at it, drank champagne at it, stayed overnight at it, fly fished it and even went skinny dipping in it! I love it so much that I think I will consider it my 2nd home ... Dancing
Thanks for the cache CarrollEyre

Loved the cache container. I'll have to come back and stay in it at some stage, because there are plenty of places I really would like to visit nearby. The log book was a little full (should I put a needs maintenance on it??!! Maybe I'll bring a new one next time I come (assuming I remember and that "next time" is soon)), but I managed to find a space to squish my moniker. My visit was as part of the excellent Magic Meal on the Mountain event, and I'm so glad that this event provided the impetus to visit here. It is a wonderful spot. Thanks CarrollEyres for the cache.

It would have been a long time for us to get ths one if it wasn't for the Magic Meal on the Mountain Event. Top effort from Carolleyre and Family and friends that made it Possible. TFTC

A magnificent day and a wonderful venue for the event "A Magic Meal On The Mountain" brilliantly organised by the CarrollEyres. The Lady Lake hut has probably never seen such a feast. A day always to be remembered because of the weather, the venue and most importantly, the company of fellow geocachers. A plus was being able to meet the requirements for this cache. The photo added to the gallery shows one of the team signing the log and the entry in the logbook. TFTC CarrollEyre

It was a lot easier to find the cache than it was to find the logbook. Seems the first two visitors books were full and we couldn't find a third. We did manage to squeeze a small entry at the very end of the book 2.

Then on the return journey we found a plastic folder full of loose pages with various entries from various periods on them. I read them all but couldn't find anything later than the 4/12/11 entry we signed after in book 2.

This hut is great, we actually went on to Ironstone and whilst the work put into building Ironstone is very much appreciated the current condition and facilities are not a patch on Lady Lake. Ironstone has perhaps a better vista and is probably better in really cold weather as I suspect the metho heater in Lady Lake takes a few by surprise. Wishing we had stayed the night at Lady Lake we toyed with making our way back but whilst we probably had just enough daylight we doubted we had enough energy after the day wandering around several side walks.

Had a great afternoon sitting in the sun on the patio on our return journey though. Beautiful location, wonderful hut. TFTC

Stopped here for morning tea before hopping across the way to Nells Bluff. Back for a late lunch about 3pm. Must come back when there is some snow about. Would be an easy access and the hut is very close to the edge of the plateau. Would be fantastic sunrise here I think. Must organise a trip like that latter in the year.

Thanks for the cache, we love non drive by caches, much more enjoyable.

Left the car at 7.33am on a fine Autumn morning and had a fast walk up hill arriving at the hut to sign the log book and a FTF at 8.55am. Have been here a number of times but it still is a great place to visit or overnight with friends. The place was deserted but there was no time to waste as other caches to be found. Thanks CarrollEyre.

Another place that the CEyrettes love to visit. We hope you enjoy your alpine excursions as well.
