Description

Wallangarra Railway Station - Historic Engineering Marker #61

The WaIlanngarra Railway Station is one of the reminders of the division created in the eastern part of Australia when the colonies of Queensland and New South Wales were formed in 1859. The railway station symbolises the differences between the two states which continue today with the use of two different rail gauges. The station functioned as a passenger station and for goods and livestock traffic from its opening in 1887 until its final closure in 1997.

The site remains a dominant element in Wallangarra, and an important vestige of the early history of the town and the surrounding border region of Queensland and New South Wales of more than 100 years ago.

Contents of the plaque:

The interchange was opened in 1887 to link the different railway gauges, adopted Queensland and NSW. The Chief Engineers of the respective railway systeems were Henry Stanley and John Whitton. Queensland narrow-gauge trains used the western side of the station and NSW standard-gauge trains the eastern. The passenger station isin Wallangarra Qld and the goods facilities (now demolished) were in Jennings NSW. The value of the interchange declined with the opening of a standard•gauge link through Kyogle in 1930.

DEDICATED BY THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS, AUSTRALIA, QUEENSLAND RAIL AND THE BORDER HIGHLANDS RAIL COMPANY PTY LTD 2001 - THE CENTENARY OF FEDERATION

When logging this virtual, please add a photo of yourself or your GPSr at the plaque.

An interesting and crazy story at this station. I’ve been meaning to check it out for a while. Today I decided to do it. I was camping at Girraween National Park - Kambuwal camping area for a couple of nights. I’ve been researching future adventures and testing out a new setup in the geo-van. Rain kept me away from two objectives but a geo-buddy joined me in camping for a night and yesterday we wandered out into the park in the drizzle. It sure is beautiful around here. I have a finite number of objectives in this region then I’ll be saying goodbye to it but that’s okay it may take a year or two haha. This was one of the objectives, thanks for the cache Smile

To be honest, this cache wasn't loaded onto my GPS and only after logging another nearby cache did I see this virtual. However I did stop and take photos (as I do of most unique things) but did not have my nametag or GPS in the photo. Doh

I actually took a ride on the train today - well worth the trip and effort if you have the time. Highly recommend it.

The thing I love about caching is the interesting stories, the extra interest and attention you take when travelling, the sight-seeing, the history, the interests of the individual CO’s, the fantastic photo opportunities and sometimes finding places that even some locals don’t know about. I, like most cachers, look for more than a mint tin or a container under a bush. I appreciate the time that most CO’s take to construct a cache and write up a comprehensive listing and to create an interesting cache. I love travelling this big land of ours. I love taking the roads less travelled seeing the sights, the amazing colours, the natural beauty. I love the diversity of the land, the different scenes in the different seasons, the fresh air, the open plains, the lofty vistas and the magnificent waters. Dancing
I love the different coffee shops I find. I love every unique thing I photograph. I enjoy the times I cache with others but I usually cache on my own. I enjoy taking my time and meandering around rather than going from one cache to the next and so on… The geocaches are a great bonus of my travels. It's amazing to see the country in the eyes of a Geocacher. Thank you for adding this virtual cache to my real-life treasure hunt. I appreciate your efforts Team MavEtJu. Clapping

#GA5163 - 13:20; Day ten of a road trip with Sol de lune for the CacheQLD - Dayboro Mega. After a big day of caching around Dayboro yesterday, wrapping up with the trivia event in the evening, we set off early this morning for home. The mission for the day was to cache our way south collecting GCA and GC caches along the way, as far west as Warialda before finishing the day at Glen Innes. Grabbed a couple of caches as we passed through Wallangarra, then on to the railway station to grab a snap of this marker. TFTC Team MavEtJu Very HappyClan Cerberus

I'm going to piggy back on Samboo's log and photo since, together we cache as a team.

This is our second visit to this station in about 20 years. Back then it was still a working station on the Queensland side and I have a photo of Peter 'holding' a Queensland loco. Its good to see that its still intact, it would have been so easy just to pull it down or let it decay after it was no longer supporting trains.

Thanks for the cache.

I live with Suzy and Pete who like trains so of course we were going to visit the railway station. Suzy said that the different awnings might have been deliberate, a way of emphasising which platform belonged to which state. No point in hanging around under the curved awing if you were waiting for a train to Tenterfield.

Thanks for the cache.

Had a great day caching in the Tenterfield area. Made time to grab this cache too. So funny to see that the QLD and NSW rail departments were in so much disagreeance back in the day that they built different awnings on the old train station. Found the marker nice and easily.

We were extremely fortunate to come looking for this cache on the one day this month that the tourist train was operating. It arrived a little late but with five full carriages of passengers mucg to the delight of the crowd that had gathered. Thanks to this cache we had a remarkable day.

Driving through Wallangarra and decided to stop and do this cache. It’s great to see this Train Station being used by the community, as no trains go by nowadays. Found the plaque and took photo of it with my GPS. TFTC Smile

Today we visited Wallangarra and went to the railway station to look for this Historic Engineering Marker. The published coordinates took us to the southern end of the platform where there were two plaques but neither were the one of interest. One plaque was headed "Wallangarra Railway Station" and described the origins of the different rail gauges and the unique railway station. The second plaque was erected to commemorate the Centenary of Federation and the survey of the Queensland/New South Wales border. We located the Historic Engineering Marker half way along the north-eastern side of the railway station at S28 55.403 E151 55.908. Three photos have been added to the Gallery: the Historic Engineering Marker; the "Wallangarra Railway Station" history plaque; and the Centenary of Federation / border survey plaque. Thanks Team MavEtJu for the cache.

The plan was to leave Nanango about 3am and cache my way down to the Granite Belt and beyond. Found a hide a Highfields then Toowoomba then Warwick then started my search for the new ones on the New England Highway heading towards Stanthorpe. Then to do the Poziers trig point and to continue caching in this area then down to Wallangarra/Jennings. Arrived at the Station and wandered around till I found the plaque on the wall of the station on the Qld side of the platform. Now to drive down to south of Armidale and start caching my way back to Stanthorpe. TFTC Team MavEtju. Very HappyClapping

Didn't have the co-ordinates but stopped for a look anyway. Can't be too many places to put a big brass plaque. We were right, it was in the obvious spot, on the railway station. Grabbed a photo and continued on our way.
