Description

Find some long lasting Olympic ephemera

ephemera
ɪˈfɛm(ə)rə,-ˈfiːm-/
noun
Things that exist or are used or enjoyed for only a short time.

The Olympics are held every 4 years, run for 2 weeks and are then largely forgotten by the world at large but still have an impact on the locals for years to come. Statues, items, stadiums*, roads, parks, gardens and other things are built for the games, possibly only for the life of the games but persist long past the games. Long lasting ephemera if you will. Your task is to find something that represents the Olympic games. note it's co-ordinates, take a photo and make your log.

An example of an unknown Olypmic statue is the one in the picture below. There is no plaque, no information that I can easily find about the statue but it is obviously an Olympic related statue ad the man in gold reaches for the goal and the torch.

You can log this geocache up to 10 times as a find but there is no restriction on the proximity of your find to anyone else's. Olympic Boulevard here we come.

* Stadia is the correct Latin plural of stadium, it is however, far more common for English speakers to use stadiums.

Recently we were in the Cataract Gorge in Launceston when, at the eastern end of the chairlift, we saw a sign which stated "Official Carrier Year 2000 Olympic Flame" and thought that it would qualify for this cache. The photo is included with this log. Thanks for the cache caughtatwork.

I was working at Concord when the Olympic site was being built. I got a ticket in the stadium through work but then had to work instead.

Due to that I got to go to the Paralympics instead. I had friends in athletics and wheelchair rugby (murderball)

In Silver Jubilee Park Bardwell Valley stands a large grove of olive trees, planted in 2002 to acknowledge the contributions of the Greek Community to the development of the City of Rockdale.
An additional olive tree has been planted in this location to commemorate the 2004 Athen Olympic torch relay which passed through the City of Rockdale on the 4th of June at Brighton Beach. The passing of the torch through here highlighting again the Greek heritage of the area.
Thanks for an interesting locationless caughtatwork.

Hi caughtatwork
What better momento of the Olympic Ephemera than that of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games Torch Run than the flame being "trekked" in action.
This photo is of my Dad carrying the torch for the said games on the road to Franklin from Huonville in Tasmania. An honour given Dad for his services to the sporting fraternity in the Huon Valley, specifically cricket amidst other community services that he constantly performed.
The torch was only used for the short period prior to it being used to lite the main flame in Sydney in 2000.
Sainted at 1000 hours
TFTC and cheers;
OldSaint.

Spotted this sign / road in my travels.
Initially a series of trunk routes, the road was named the Olympic Way on 5 July 1963, in honour of part of the path that the Olympic Torch took on its journey from Cowra to Albury for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. It was renamed as the Olympic Highway in 1996,[1] and the route between Wagga Wagga and Cowra was used for torch relay for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

I worked at the Amateur Athletics Association of NSW in 1980. My Bosses went over to the Moscow Olympics and brought me back an Olympic Mascot "Mishka" bear. This has mostly been stored in the cupboard for the last 37 years! His stuffing has depleted and the elastic in the belt has stretched but the cuteness has stayed the same. I headed to the Regatta Centre in Penrith this morning to photograph the Olympic Rings on the bridge to put with a photo of my bear.

In 1956 my mother was about 20 years old and attended a few of the athletics sessions of the Melbourne Olympics at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. She bought this teaspoon as a memento. I keep it in my teaspoon collection.

Thank you caughtatwork for this cache.

Out caching with Joolay and Darzee Di for the SoN game. We came past the Australian Institute of Sport to pick up some Olympic statues. Wonderful place that has forged champions. Wish I could have checked out some more of the statues - wonderful work here. TFTC

This park is tucked away in Homebush the home of the Sydney Olympics.
The park is a "Hellenic Tribute" to the Greek involvement in the Olympics.

Back in 2000 the Olympic torch bearers ran past my front door. The street was lined with a few onlookers. From that, I have photos and a paper flag that was swirled around for the occasion. Since then, and about five or so years back I had a tracksuit from the Sydney Olympics and a brochure but gave them to another interested party. Since then I have acquired a tshirt and shorts, which I still have, and a couple of plastic white mugs which we use from time to time in the car. I'll have to locate them and grab a photo for this cache asap.

In 1956, at a time when such a trip was a significant undertaking from New Norfolk, Tasmania, DD's uncle went to the Melbourne Olympics. He brought this souvenir back for DD's mother, who eventually passed it on to DD. If you want to see it, it is at my house.

This the 2000 Sydney Olympics flame cauldron which was moved after the completion of the games a short distance from the olympic stadium (now known as ANZ Stadium) in Olympic Park, Sydney. A Jnr DaFiChNi is proudly standing beneath the cauldron. Thanks Caughtatwork for organising this locationless cache.

Olympic flame cauldron at USQ Toowoomba gym. I believe a couple of the visiting sports teams also trained here. This part of the building was closed early this morning so i had to snap a picture through the glass.

When I saw this task in the scavenge list for States of the Nation 2017-18 I was confident that over the next few weks I'd find something somewhere.

This afternoon, I found my confidence completely justified when I found this ephemeric item in the Nation Museum of Australia. For full details, see the second photo, but I think myself lucky that the maker's desire for the piece to end up with the Royal family wasn't realised.

Very pleased to add this one to my finds.

We used to have an Olympic Sports Stadium in Kialla, but sadly it is now closed.
The next best thing I could find is Olympic Avenue here in Shepparton.
We have had a few fine Olympians in our region, but so far no monument has been put up for them, other than the local Sportsman's Hall Of Fame, and it encompasses all sporting personalities, not just Olympians.
Sheppparton hosts a lot of sporting events, especially lawn bowls, and will be holding the World Beach Volleyball competitions early next year..
Thankyou for the oppportunity of logging this Locationless.

Sydney Olympic Volunteers - Sydney Olympic Park - New South Wales
From the 16th of September until the 1st of October 2000, Sydney hosted the Games of the XXVII Olympiad. These games were pronounced as "..the best Olympic Games ever."
Sydney, and especially the Olympic Park precinct were a mass with athletes, officials, spectators and the Olympic Volunteers in their "unique" uniforms.
Being an Olympic Volunteer allowed many "ordinary" people to be part of something quite special.
Well my old man just did that. Clan Griffin

On our last visit to Sydney we toured the Olympic Park Precinct. The picture I have attached shows the 2000 Sydney Games Unofficial Olympic Mascot - Fatso the Fat-Arsed Wombat in all his amazing glory. The young DaFiChNi's had a good laugh! Thanks Caughtatwork for providing the locationless cache.

There is no plaque at this statue, no local information and the City of Stonnington have no idea what this is. If anyone knows anything about this statue, why it's here, what it celebrates or any other information, post a note so we can track down this long lasting Olympic ephemera.
