Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

A great trig and fantastic views. Perfect!

No problem finding this trig at the top of a very pointy hill, but what a steep walk to get there! We parked a good way further up than the 'normal' carpark just inside the gate to the reserve, but still had 1.5 km walk up the road and then back - no shortcuts.

The thing I love about caching is the interesting stories, the extra interest and attention you take when travelling, the sight-seeing, the history, the interests of the individual CO’s, *the fantastic photo opportunities* and sometimes finding places that even some locals don’t know about. I, like most cachers, look for more than a mint tin or a container under a bush. I appreciate the time that most CO’s take to construct a cache and write up a comprehensive listing and to create an interesting cache. **I love travelling this big land of ours.** I love taking the roads less travelled seeing the sights, the amazing colours, the natural beauty. I love the diversity of the land, the different scenes in the different seasons, the fresh air, the open plains, the lofty vistas and the magnificent waters. I love the different coffee shops I find. I enjoy the times I cache with others but I usually cache on my own. The geocaches are a great bonus of my travels. It's amazing to see the country in the eyes of a Geocacher. Thank you for adding this cache to my real-life treasure hunt. I appreciate your efforts.

The views from the top over the lake and the uninterrupted views of the snow covered peaks are really something to behold. Getting here can be a bit of a challenge but totally worth it.

Wow they don't often get much better than this. Overnight stay in Mansfield last night. Before heading off I decided to checkout The Paps and I'm glad I did. WHAT a view!

If only these trigs could talk.

They couldn't have put it higher... it is at the VERY top of The Paps. Vanes are in pretty good condition and the frame (no pedestal) is also in pretty good nick. TFTC.

I managed o persuade Pa into driving myself and his cousin up here this afternoon. Although she has lived in Bonnie Doon for over 30 years she had never been up here before so it was a treat for us all. We arrived at the bottom gate just as another car did, so I beckoned them through and continued up the road after closing the gate. Imagine our surprise after parking at the top, we heard 2 vehicles approaching - the second being a couple of local police. The driver of the other vehicle was quite apprehensive that he had been caught doing something wrong - eg trespassing. The police just laughed and told him no, he had been speeding. With this joviality going on it was quite easy to sneak away , have the photo taken and then proceed to find a nearby multi cache. Thanks for the Trig cache GCA, it turned into a fun afternoon with great views.

After a leisurely drive down the King Valley and a stop overnight in Mansfield we collected the required info for multicache with a GZ not too far from this trig point. We were both very surprised at the number of overenergetic people walking up the hill and the three teenage girls sitting just in front of our car enjoying a picnic. It's rare to see teenagers wasting energy on anything other than a keyboard so to see them at the top of the hill sans vehicle was quite a shock. Shocked

We were staying in Mansfield on the way back home, so I had to find a few caches. The intent was to find the nearby GC traditionals, but I took a wrong turn and ended up at the top. The AWD Volvo handled the road very well, but I did have a few nervous moments. You certainly wouldn't do it with a 2WD or without a serious 4WD in the wet. Fortunately, the road was dry.

The location has some significance for me too, since I helped install radio equipment here a few years back.

I put the camera down to take the required photo with the phone and only notices the lack of the camera after having descended about 800m down the mountain. Not being game to turn the car around on the narrow track, I walked back up to the top to find the camera.

Thanks Geocaching Australia - A top spot.

2200 GAFF0 Wink (As I was looking for another cache while in the area. Not too sure about the Terrain 2 rating, as it is T3 from the lower area to park a 2wd, otherwise 4wd would be a must.
Some moon out to help show the way. Took a photo of the survey marker directly underneath as well. GREAT

Was up here today to perform maintenance on my nearby cache, The Papal Menagerie.
The views across to a very snowy Mt Buller and Mt Stirling were sensational.
The road up has been improved recently, but high clearance is a must. My Subaru Outback with it's 200mm clearance was fine, but the average family sedan or low sports vehicle wouldn't do it. Even a long wheelbase 4WD might struggle on the high drainage humps.
I've attached photos of the trg and I, and the plate underneath.

The views up here were breathtaking today.
My Garmin batteries were dead so the phone was doubling up as camera and GPSr and is not in the picture.

Visited this one at around 15:00 having taken a diversion from our trip north for tomorrow's bushwalk. The glorious weather meant that the views in all directions were simply sensational and although the panic stricken members of the team were worried about the drive to GZ Pray, the GeoPaj handled the trip with ease Very Happy.

Many thanks Geocaching Australia.

Great drive up very challenging considering the rain. Met 2 Telstra guys walking back down to their vehicle which didnt make it past the 2nd gate due to the road. Grabed the other cacher while we were here, very windy today.
Will log a picture when we get home

Woohoo! A *FTF* on a trigpoint. That's a new one for us!

To be honest I'm surprised to have logged this one first, given the number of people who have found the nearby cache. Oh well, their loss!!

Great drive up here and amazing views to snow-capped Buller today.
