Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

very muggy today walking along the never ending ridges to the trig. onto Lake Herbert for snack and coffee

Arrived at Tullah and the weather looked a bit dodge, so we ate some lunch at the shelter before heading up. Weather cleared up nicely though as we went. Straightforward (though steep) path through forest, then buttongrass plains, then a scrambly rocky ridge to get to the trig. A wedge-tailed eagle came and circled gracefully above us over the buttongrass valley, which was awesome. Sun came out when we got to the ridge, presenting beautiful views of Lake Mackintosh, the lovely hidden Lake Herbert and imposing view of Mt. Murchison opposite. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to make the trip down to the lake (the start of the lake track has collapsed into a mini-ravine which requires jumping over, which didn’t fill me with confidence!), but it was a great day’s walk.

We went up here on a perfect autumn blue sky day with nary a cloud to be seen. It was a walk with our bushwalking club and this is a straightforward and easy hill to climb with great views at the top. After the trig we dropped down to Lake Herbert for lunch before heading back down to the cars.

This was an amazing climb. We set off nice and early on a totally clear morning and as we got to the button grass area out of the trees, we saw a little bunch of Christmas bells. Then we saw some more. Then we saw a hillside FULL of Christmas bells. As we kept going, the whole of the route was covered in clumps of them. Quite stunning. To say nothing of the wonderful views. And the little snake just by the trig Surprised

Great walk. It takes about half an hour of reasonably steep to get up on the buttongrass plains. I walked round the back to the "Eastern Ridge" and turned off at Nerebil's waypoint, which is a little cairned intersection wiht the track to go up. After reachign a top point, the track does continue but is pretty indistinct over several pseudo-summits till the trig point is reached. It was a glorious day so it was just magic up there. I back tracked a little way until it was a clear run down to re-join the Lake Herbert track. I spent a good while there as well as many photo stops on the way back. It was just me and the wilderness up there, truly remote but a not too difficult walk. With all my stopping and extra bits, I took 4 and 1/2 hrs. The Tullah locals impressed me with their friendliness, everyone was ready for a long chat, and my arrival back to the car was being monitored. A terrific day.

Our second trig for the area today, after completing Burns Peak. This one required the walking boots be pulled on, took some lunch & headed off on a near perfect day.A fairly steep start which opens out onto an open area before heading up onto the ridge. Easy to follow track to the ridge turn off. We made it about 950m to the trig point from here, the track gets a bit vague the closer you get, as there are several good vantage points before the trig & I guess not everyone goes all the way. Spectacular views the reward for about an 1 3/4 hr walk. Return much quicker! Back to the Tullah motor inn for a cold beer, excellent meal & log fire. Perfect end to a perfect day.

A FTF Have been up this way a few times in the past but this time I took the camera. A 3 hour return walk up a fairly good track but spent longer than this exploring the area. Walk up the main track for about 1 hour to the ridge turn off at S41 44 454 E 145 38 482. and continue along this track over and around a few ridges to the trig about 500m away.
