Logs for Team Mumu
12-Oct-22
Wow, it's been well over a year since I signed on with Kittykatch and team Country Cachers to be part of this epic journey. It was the summer of 2021, I was fully vaccinated and expected our regular visits to NYC would soon resume after a year and a half of avoiding the city during pandemic times.
I vicariously enjoyed watching the rest of the team gradually make progress, and finally my long awaited penultimate leg was at hand. My trip to the city went off without a hitch (I'd been back several times starting in January) and I was happy to get the required information for us to complete the journey.
I haven't been to Australia since I lived in Canberra for a year, but perhaps one day I'll return.
Thank you all for including me in this group effort.

When I found the cache on 8/22/17, there was only one TB inside on that date. I took and logged that TB and left another one which has not yet been logged out although a subsequent visitor said they "took a TB". Any other trackables still listed that were placed before Aug 22 are likely missing.
The photo with our 8/22/17 log shows EVERYTHING that was in the cache when we left, i.e., not very much.

We were in Nebraska for the total eclipse of the sun yesterday. Today we headed into Kansas as it seems neither of us has ever been to Kansas before. For our first geocache find in KS, Mingo seemed like the natural choice!
We were signing in as the Cache-inator rolled up. Took some pictures and dropped a TB and one of our signature fish beads, [mumu fish #3198](http://anadromous.net/geotokens/3101-3200.html).

It takes two to find this cache. One to spot it, and the other to jump up and down for the grab and replacement. Only generating a few funny looks from passersby.

We spent 6 days on Easter Island and were able to have front row seats for the total eclipse of the sun on July 11. It was a perfect magical time. We had ample free time and walked up to this cache from our hotel, accompanied by one of the island dogs who waited near the mirador while we cached. Left one of our signature mumu fish http://www.anadromous.net/geotokens/ .

I'm surprised no one else has found this cache in a while, especially with the large influx of visitors for the total solar eclipse on July 11. We used one of our free mornings before eclipse day and had an enjoyable stroll up to the coordinates. The higher we went the thicker the fog until near the top we couldn't see more than a few feet away from us. We decided to describe the view as "mistical" with an i instead of a y.

We made a quick detour over to the cache on one of our fabulous days on Easter Island.

We spent a fabulous week on Rapa Nui culminating in viewing the total solar eclipse on July 11. Our hotel was located near the base of Rano Kau, and we took a leisurely stroll up the trail to the top of it one morning. Since we weren't there with a group, we had time to walk around the rim and enjoy the place.

We loved the quarry! We were there a few days before the total solar eclipse on July 11 and had a few days to explore the island before the big event. The path to the summit was closed so we took photos with the GPS by the largest Moai and at the viewpoint overlooking Tongariki with Poike in the background.

We found this cache while touring around the island in anticipation of the big event (total solar eclipse) that would be coming. Our small group of 13 seemed to arrive a day or so before the hordes of other eclipse viewers and had the island to ourselves for a very peaceful day of Moai viewing. I became aware of this cache a few days ago and hoped someone would move it north or east so it would be a bit closer. I was truly surprised to see it pop up as the closest unfound near home today. So we had to go out on this otherwise drizzly day and nab it. We decided to keep walking and moved the cache a bit further along the trail after leaving a note on a leaf under a rock at the old spot.
It's now at N41 06.303 W73 48.967 under rock up in big oak tree (tree looks cool in the satellite google map). There are heaps of other caches in this park, and the weather is meant to improve, so I can't imagine this staying put for very long.
Left mumu fish #1397 http://www.anadromous.net/geotokens/1351-1400.html . Took one of the geocoins. Saw a car with NJ plates and a geocaching sticker parked, perhaps it belongs to weathernowcast.

Ho! Ho! Ho! We did a great loop walk today taking the Major Welch trail up to the summit of Bear Mountain and then came down along the Appalachian Trail. Weather temps in the upper 40s were great for this Christmas Eve walk. The only minor difficulty was more ice on the trail than expected making our progress a bit slow in spots. It was getting dark as we got near the trail head, but not as dark as it looks in the picture! The sign is where we both started and ended our hike near the Bear Mountain Inn.

The Iron Horse Grill (now a restaurant) used to be the Pleasantville train station building at the turn of the century. Metro North trains still run by including the train John takes to the city daily, but people now just wait at the outdoor platform.

My photos include the Sept 22, 2002 NYtimes restaurant review posted in their window as well as a shot from the north looking at the building with and without GPS.
The address is 20 Wheeler Ave, Pleasantville, NY. The geocaching map puts the GPS coords a couple of blocks off, but the google maps are right on.

The Cross River Dam in Katonah, New York is in a very pretty area and has been a favorite spot for birders in the past. However, with heightened fears of terrorism since 9/11, New York has blocked off the ability to walk across or up to the bottom of the dam. I got as close as legally allowed on the southern end to take GPS readings and photos.
Westchester County has a great web site with lots of info: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/watershed/html/crossriverinfo.html The dam in brief:
the last stone was laid on October 26, 1907
capacity when full is 10.3 billion gallons
it dams the Cross River and is one small part of the supply for New York City.
BTW, today's date is 05/05/05 and I thought it would be cool to find 5 caches to celebrate.

It's quite fitting that Washington Irving, possibly best known for his "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in New York. Washington Irving, short story writer, essayist, poet, travel book writer, biographer, and columnist, was one of the first Americans to make a living solely from his writings. His gravesite has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Here's a link to one poem I found online:

Being surrounded by water one would expect to find a lot of lighthouses in New Orleans. This one is located in the warehouse district a stone's throw from the Mississippi River. It didn't appear to be functioning as a lighthouse and has been converted to a gallery, as have many of the buildings in this area.

While exploring the cool rock formations in the Vasquez Rocks area (remember the Arena episode from Startrek?) we came upon this rock that resembles a frog.

I made a virtual visit from California. From the web page it looks like a great place, and I'll definitely visit in person if I ever get to that side of the country.
Thanks for leading me on an interesting web journey.

We didn't think we were going the right way because nothing in the description seemed right. Then we found the spot, I think we were approaching from the opposite side. The red rope is still there, and the cache is in tact. Left a travel bug. First one to find this cache!
