Logs for Wilburii

07-Feb-11
Took a deviation on my route to work and had a stroll along the embankment. Came up trumps without much effort.

Many thanks for the hide, I've never actually stopped here before despite going past many times over the years.

I had just enough time to nip out of Paddington to find this before the train left. When I got GZ my gpsr was pointing me into the park. I thought this was wrong but I followed the arrow to let it settle and then walked out to where I thought it should be and there it was. It needs a new log sheet. I was unprepared so I'm sorry I couldn't help out. Many thanks for the brisk walk!

Eleven months after starting to plan the trip we eventually turned up in the rain to visit the Westminster Clock Tower, more popularly known as Big Ben. I arrived a few minutes early and took a wrong turning to make sure I passed this spot to get the necessary answers!

The demonstration yesterday was by the ex-Ford workers who lost their pensions when, if I remember correctly, Ford sold off the part of the business that they worked in. That company then went bust taking the pension pot with it, and the remains were then bought back by Ford without any outstanding debts and commitments leaving the workers with no pension for all their years of service.

Many thanks for encouraging me to get out in the rain!

Took my turn in the queue of muggles waiting to have their picture taken next to the statue. Once there was a slight gap I found the cache but then the log wouldn't roll up again so in the end I had to be blatent but the tourist didn't see a thing!

We had a couple of hours free on our last morning in Venice, so after visiting the Museo Fortuny (curious modern art in a fabulous old building) I dragged the family by a little deviation to this spot - and well worth it too! One day this place will have its restoration finished and we'll be able to climb to the top but until then, like everyone else, here's a photo from the bottom.

An easy find and an easy hide as I sat on top of the wall on top of the cache and used my bag to hide what I was doing, not that anyone took the slightest notice! Thanks for the cache - it's a really good spot to sit and look around.

I've been close to this twice this year but always on the wrong road, so I was pleased to be able to stop at the right spot for a change.

Locating the cache was easy despite the muggles sat in their car - I'd parked mine in the way to obscure the view and I made a meal of taking a big folder out of the car and then dropping something out of it as cover when I picked up the cache. In fact they were too preoccupied with each other to notice me so putting it back was much easier!

Thanks for a quick and easy one!

I wish I'd looked at the logs before I embarked on looking for this one! My printout was from a while back and I never got round to checking current availability. Suffice to say that there was nothing there - just a somewhat miffed resident who banged on the window after I'd been there a while and grunted something through the double glazing which I took to mean "P!£$ off!" so I did.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) wrote a number of famous works including the unfinished "Kubla Khan" which starts:

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan/ A stately pleasure-dome decree: / Where Alph, the sacred river, ran / Through caverns measureless to man / Down to a sunless sea.

He's also well known for his Rime of the Ancient Mariner (I had to learn that one at school).

Coleridge was addicted to opium but, while living at this spot in Church Street in Calne in Wiltshire, still managed to write his Biographia Literaria (1817), which according to the Columbia University Press Encyclopaedia contains "accounts of his literary life and critical essays on philosophical and literary subjects. It presents Coleridge's theories of the creative imagination, but its debt to other writers, notably the German idealist philosophers, is often so heavy that the line between legitimate borrowing and plagiarism becomes blurred."

Every year for the past 3 years we've made the long trek from darkest Wiltshire to the Globe theatre and this year is no exception. It seemed natural to have a look to see what was nearby and found that this was very close to the other part of our expedition - the walk across the wobbly bridge (yes I know, it doesn't wobble anymore). Hadn't spotted this before so thanks for making me look about. The rest of the party thought I was mad until they took a closer look.
