Logs for SpiderTracks

Our second find in Australia - we are on a roll now! We had just enough time to find this cache after several hours with the Wildlife Park and trying to make it to the Chocolate Factory before it closed at 5pm. Very nice place for a cache on a wonderful island full of fun things to do and see. I wish we could come again some day. We found the container after just a short search and keeping in mind your comment about not needing to walk on the wetlands. We left four travel bugs: Cache 2010 Coin; Geico Travel Tag; Mojo the Travel Monkey; and Travel Lake Powell TB02, all four of which we brought clear from Utah. We also had our own SpiderTracks LogBug stop through for a visit. We also left 3 of our GeoTokens #504, #524, #525. Please move the travel bugs along and several of the tokens if you would be so kind. Thanks for the fun - SpiderTracks - Vernal, Utah - Find #537

Finally on our 7th try we found our first cache in Australia! Coordinates were spot on in spite of lots of trees in the area and the clue was perfect. And this was the very first cache find for our new daughter in law who was starting to think we didn't know what we were doing after 6 misses in 6 tries previously. I was hoping to drop off a few travel bugs but only able fit (just barely) one travel bug into the cache. We also left our personal GeoToken #494 (I believe) and our traditional spider which might give then next finder a bit of a fright. I hope you read this.... its just plastic and please take it as a souvenir from some old geocachers from Utah. We dropped off Olivia's Angel here. Please move her along. We also are logging the other travel bugs for a visit to this very beautiful area. Thanks for the cache. - SpiderTracks, Vernal, Utah, USA - Find #536
We looked very hard for this one and came up with our 6th DNF in 6 tries in Australia. It is starting to get discouraging and I am feeling like I have lost the nack for finding geocaches. I followed every sign of people poking about but just couldn't spot the cache. I think my eyes are getting too old. Its a shame because we really wanted to drop of 5 travel bugs from the US here. But in spite of my failings in finding the cache, I am sure the travel bugs in my pocket were close to it a number of times, so I am going to log their visit.. Thanks for a very nice hunt in a beautiful and interesting area. - SpiderTracks, Vernal, Utah

Four of us worked hard to try and find this but sadly we came up short. Were a bit confused by the formula but tried several ways of interpreting it and sadly did not find the right spot. We loved the area however. One of the most beautiful lighthouses ever for us. We had travel bugs with us and hope its okay to log a visit for theme as they deserve the miles in spite of our failure. Thanks for the hunt. - SpiderTracks, Vernal, Utah.

This is a beautiful town and nice walk to the area of the cache. But I couldn't find the cache. I think I should have brought a flashlight. Very nice spot however and I enjoyed it a lot. Letting some travelers log a visit in spite of my failing to find the cache. - SpiderTracks, Vernal, Utah, USA
Our fourth hunt in Australia and our fourth DNF! Sheesh... we had four people looking in, out, high and low for this and just couldn't find it. Very cool hut and history though. Thanks for the hunt. Let some travelers "visit" for the mileage they deserve in spite of our failings. - SpiderTracks, Vernal, Utah

Our first attempt while in Australia. I was at fault for having not copied down all the clues and for trying to rely on my memory. But we still so enjoyed our walk along the river here. We had travel bugs with us and we want them to enjoy the mileage so I hope it is okay to log them in and out even though we were only close to the cache. Thanks for the hunt. - SpiderTracks, Vernal, Utah, USA
Our second try and second miss. Whaaaaa... But we very much enjoyed the area. The fire show nearby was spectacular. We had some travelers with us and logging them for a visit because they were so close and they need to have credit for the distance in spite of our failure to find the cache. Thanks for the hunt. - SpiderTracks, Vernal, Utah, USA

We are just finishing up a virtual flying trip around the world with our virtual travel bug named SpiderWings which is MIA bug reincarnated. Please check out SpiderWings’ page TB3CEB http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?guid=6d4c5772-4f7a-41d5-bb8c-83b431fcd6cf where you can read all about our trip, our goals to seek geocaches all around the world, MAPS of our travels and caches logged with notes, FLAGS of every nation/territory/province/state that we’ve been to and AIRCRAFT PICTURES of the many forms SpiderWings has taken. We think you’ll find the graphics interesting. We used to log the bug in and out of the caches, and encouraged cachers along the way to grab it. But since it is a virtual travel bug, it is now locked against any further logs. Thanks for letting us pay a virtual visit to your cache and snap some screen shots of its area.
Deciding to get out of virtual time and back into real, we headed off from Dutch John where we landed August 19, 2005VT on May 15, 2006RT to begin our virtual quest of locating the flight sim's rendition of cache hides in each of Utah's 29 counties.
Its been an awesome journey so far as we came west across the top part of the state, worked our way down through the western counties and now up the east. The simulator has done a terrific job with the Utah mountains allowing Mr. ST to virtually find our way by recognizing the lay of the land. Flying in Utah has been a great surprise and well worth the 2 year wait since getting FS2004.
After "finding" the spot for Bob Rich's Ground Zero - NOT Geocache in Grand County we checked out the virtual view of the San Rafael Swell, then decided we just had to do Utah's very first cache - even only virtually. Joe's Valley and the mountains on both sides were all very nice. From here we need to land at Huntington for a new plane, then head for A Bit of Helper History Geocache by Hyper Cache in Carbon County.

We are on a virtual flying trip around the world with our virtual travel bug named Spider Wings. We started out in a simulated Cessna 182 airplane, but have since tried a good number of other aircraft. Our goal is to find at least one cache in each country and territory in the world and thereby get an idea of how many caches are out in the far reaches of the world. We hope you won't mind our virtual passage near your cache and will even enjoy the virtual "photo" of the area that we'd like to post. We'd also love to hear back from you regarding the photo and how well the simulator's coordinates did with locating your cache, and how the scenery compares to real life. We realize the simulator can't show everything.
As we find ourselves back in North America for the last part of our journey, we have decided that we ought to visit each US state and each Canadian province. We have already been to some of each back in March 2004 on our way to the North Pole via the east coast. But both countries are just too vast to not see more of them. In addition to finding one cache in each state or province, we also want to visit the capitol cities of each.
After venturing to so many distant lands that we can only imagine in reality, we finally find an area that we have actually been to in real life. We visited this area back in 1987 on a trip between Calgary and Seattle. Its much prettier in real life than on the flight sim, but still thanks for letting us pay a virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

We are on a virtual flying trip around the world with our virtual travel bug named Spider Wings. It started as a simulated Cessna 182 airplane. But recently we've started using other types of aircraft as the virtual availability of Cessnas seems to have wained somewhat. Our goal is to find at least one cache in each country we visit that is a good representation of what we know (or come to learn from our travel and related study) of that country. In the process we are getting a good idea of how many caches are out in the far reaches of the world. The Pitcairn Islands is our 267th country/territory. We arrived here after spending several days exploring many of the islands of French Polynesia to the northwest. We first visited Sandy and Oeno and then here to Pitcairn itself where we landed at Bounty Bay after finding the spot for your cache. Then we'll head east to Henderson and Ducie which will put us directly south of California and just 7 to 8 hundred miles west of Easter Island which we visited early in our trip back in December 2003 to January 2004 making virtual repairs to our plane before heading for Antartica. Thanks for letting us pay this virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

Since our last cache in Fiji on the 15th of March, we flew north to Tuvalu, Nauru, then through Northwestern Kiribati, to Howland and Baker (US Islands), back into Kiribati (Pheonix Islands), south through Tokelau, to Samoa. Sounds simple enough right? Well... actually we had a few mishaps along the way.
On our final approach to a landing in the shoreline brush on Baker Island, I let the forward speed get too low and I put one of our landing gear in the wave tops. I was able to pull back out of the water but then the speed was really too low and we went in again... this time we sunk the Vega clear the wings and had to scramble out for air.
In the virtual weeks after, we managed to winch the plane ashore, dry out the electronics and engine, steal some juice from a nearby weather station's solar collectors, finally make radio contact, get new prop and plugs on the way, and had the Vega ready to go again on April 3rd.
The very next landing, on McKeen Island was good but while taxiing through the field, I hit the brakes too hard and nosed the engine into the dirt.... radioed for yet another prop and lost more time making repairs.
Then... in Tokeleu we looked long and hard for solid land, seeing only coral reefs under shallow light blue waters. Finally we spotted a tiny island... did I say tiny? It looked about twice as long and three times the length of our plane and I knew a landing would be impossible. But as it is our agenda to at least touch each country I decided to do a short touch and go. Came in low and easy... touched down just right and was giving it gas to get back in the air... when I realized I'd misjudged the open space between the weather station and the north shore... the weather station caught the left wing and stopped us cold. Even if I were able to make the necessary virtual repairs, there was not nearly enough room for a takeoff. We ended up getting rescued by a sea plane that we made a deal on and turned the wrecked Vega over to the pilot for salvage rights.
Then on that flight we ran out of gas coming in for a water landing at Swain's Island (American Samoa) and had to have fuel sent out on a fishing boat.
But finally we made it to Samoa for a more than welcome real airport late last night. This morning we took off early and easily located the virtual location of your cache. RLS would surely appreciate the adventures incurred getting to this point. Thanks for letting us pay a virtual visit and for letting us relate our adventures here. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

Tonga is our 253rd country/territory so far. As we flew up from New Zealand last night it was too dark to look for the cache. And now in the light of day we see that the simulator virtually left out North Minerva Reef. But here is a picture of where it should be and where the cache would be located. Thanks for letting us pay a virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

New Zealand is our 252nd country/territory. We have had a terrific adventure exploring the outlying islands, South Island, and now North Island. So much beauty in this country... even when seen virtually. We would have been here sooner but I came in a little too hard at Auckland Int'l a few weeks ago and crumpled a landing gear and tore off the wing tip in the process. But we've finally made it to our NZ cache. We saw your Blue Duck TB which we wish we had room to take with us. But virtuality has its limits. Oddly enough though we did have room for a yellow duck that we brought with us and left to keep Blue company. Thanks for letting us pay this virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

Australia is our 251st country/territory. And since we have a great fondness of it and want to see more than just one part, we've decided to do at least one cache in each state.
Tasmania is the 8th and final state. We flew down from Canberra. We decided this was a quite appropriate cache for Tasmania. In our virtual TB visit, we wanted to pay homage to all the missing bugs there. Thanks for letting us pay this virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

Yours may be a difficult mountain to climb but it wasn't too bad flying to the cache location. We took some nice virtual pictures that we hope you'll enjoy. Thanks for letting us pay this virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

However, this is our 2nd for New South Wales. We decided we just had to do one as close to Finley as possible because our son once lived there for a while. Your cache is just a few miles south. The sim had the coordinates a bit north of the river (see red cross) so we took our best quess as to the correct position based on pictures posted in the cache. How close did we get? Thanks for letting us pay this virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

We realize the simulator can't show everything.
Australia is our 251st country/territory. And since we have a great fondness of it and want to see more than just one part, we've decided to do at least one cache in each state.
South Australia is our 5th state. When looking for a cache for this state, we found the perfect one in yours.... how could we pass on one named Virtual Vacation on this virtual around the world trip. We found the area virtually beautiful and will be sending a "postcard" of our trip as well as posting some virtual pictures here. Thanks for letting us pay a virtual visit to the virtual vacation cache.

We hope you won't mind our virtual passage near your cache and will even enjoy the virtual "photo" of the area that we'd like to post. Northern Territory is our 3rd state. We flew west to Darwin from Queensland and then down the center of the state to Alice Springs which was a must for our trip. Then we headed to the southeast part of the state to find this geocache spot. What a fun story the cache is based on. We are happy to have our tracks cross the same path. Off to the west now... hope to find Ayers Rock there. Thanks for letting us pay a virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

Western Australia is our 4th state. We flew west from Ayers Rock in NT, across the state line then south to find the area of this cache. How could we forgoe getting one in this state that was related to a plane wreck. Of course the flight sim didn't show any wreckage and we were lucky enough to plant some of our own as we buzzed low over the cache site. Thanks for letting us pay a virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

New South Wales is the first state to visit. We arrived at the end of a westerly flight from Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands. On this flight sim, only a few of the most well-known cities include scenery in addition to the standard generic buildings and city-scape. We were most happy to see Sydney with a good number of its landmarks rendered. And were especially pleased to see that the "Coat Hanger" was not overlooked. We took a lot of virtual photos. Norfolk Island is our 250th country/territory. And its the first one in a few with a geocache for us to visit. Our last cache on this virtual trip was in Indonesia. Since then we've flown through Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia none of which had caches.
The flight simulator has some problems at Norfolk Island with water being where land should be several hundred feet above sea level. And the sim's coordinates have the cache in the middle of the island while this site's map shows the cache on the edge of the coral reef out to the west side of the island. Also the ground cover on the sim didn't show the beautiful Norfolk pines that are in several of the pictures previously posted for the cache. But thanks for letting us pay a virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

Bhutan is our 221st country/territory. Even though we've already virtually visited the Great Himalayas in countries to the west, we were still so impressed with their magnitude and beauty. After finding the spot of this cache we had a rather nasty virtual misadventure as I tried to fly the DC-3 on up the little canyon to the northwest to hopefully get a look at the little lake that we'd seen at its top from our approach at higher altitudes. But the old bird just didn't have the ability to stay above the sharp rising canyon bottom and we made a belly crash landing. The next virtual morning, we returned to the site in a Piper Cub to land and gather up our stuff. But first I tried again to slowly climb up to the area of the small lake. We got so close (12,000 feet) but the Cub just wouldn't climb any further and we needed another 100 feet or so. So I guess we'll just have to wait for another time to see the lake. Thanks for letting us pay a virtual visit. - ST, Vernal, Utah, USA

Okay... I'll give it a try. Be back in 12 hours or less with logic and pictures!
I'm back!!!
My step #1 is at N 40° 13.141' W 109° 13.729' which is 1699 miles west of GneissTuff&Wacke's cemetary where an unknown soldier is buried. I couldn't find the grave of an unknown soldier but recalling local folklore found my way out onto Deadman's Bench on the edge of the Walker Hollow Oil & Gas Field in Northeastern Utah. The coordinates are for the grave of an unknown man that was found many years ago and buried at this spot.
My step #2 is at N 40° 21.663' W 109° 24.814'. If you follow Walker Hollow northeast from the Walker Hollow Oil & Gas Field in Step #1, you will find its confluence with the Green River. Continueing northeast across the river you will find The Ashley Oil Field just south of Ashley Creek near the bottom of Ashley Valley. The oil field here is step #2. Oil field is the link. Its 13.8 miles from step #1.
My step #3 is at the top coordinates for my log, N 40° 29.054' W 109° 33.247'. Following Ashley Creek mentioned in step #2 northeast another 11.3 miles toward the corner of Ashley Valley, you will find the Ashley Post Office (log cabin) which is one of the oldest surviving structures in the valley and served as post office and general store to the earliest settlers in the 1870 - 1880's. The link between #2 and 3 is Ashley Creek which runs close to both. #2, #3 and the creek get their names from General William Ashley the explorer.
Thanks for the fun - ST, Vernal, Utah (Find#225)

This was very interesting and quite fun as well. This is the second time I was able to log a virtual cache right at the computer. It also opened my eyes to a world of wealth of information that can be found with listening on the www. Thanks for the fun and enlightenment. - ST, Vernal, Utah (Find #204)

Steinaker Dam and Resevoir supplies supplemental irrigation water to about 14,700 acres and approximately 1,600 acre-feet of municipal and industrial water annually to the communities of Vernal, Naples, and Maeser. The dam was completed in 1962. - ST, Vernal, Utah (Find #171)
