Logs for mcquetta

01-Apr-12
A nice simple cache for the final day of the OT, to pass the time whilst waiting for the bus. TFTC.

I worked out the approximate location of the caches from the previous logs, but when I reached the area my GPS was having trouble finding the satellites, so I located the cache easily using the clue. TFTC.

Day 4 of the OT, and still very lucky with the weather. Reached the top of Mt Ossa in cloud but happily not long afterwards it all cleared away to give fantastic views. Enjoyed the views first, and then went to look for the cache, introducing two fellow OTers to geocaching. A nice easy find. Happily there was a pencil inside as I'd forgotten to bring a pen up the mountain. TFTC.

A large party of school boys were preparing to climb Mt Ossa when I reached the cache location, so waited until my return from the mountain summit to look for the cache. TFTC.

Left Windermere hut earlyish on Day 3 of the OT and arrived at New Pelion at lunch time. The morning's blue skies had given way to cloud but the cloud level was high enough to leave the summit and spires of Oakleigh clear and no rain was threatening, so I made the trip to the summit and was rewarded with fantastic views and another FTF! A well deserved 5 stars for the terrain.

Passed this on the way to New Pelion hut on Day 3 of the OT, but was in such a hurry to head up Mt Oakleigh while the weather was still good that I didn't stop to look and ended up coming back later to find it by torchlight. Nice easy find; despite the challenges of the OT I think 5 stars for terrain is a bit of an exaggeration... TFTC.

I completely agree with the CO's aim to encourage people to enjoy the side trips of the Overland Track - it seems such a shame to make all the effort to come out here and not make the most of it. Visited Lake Will on Day 2 of the OT, after a beautiful morning's trip up Barn Bluff at the start of the day. The morning's blue sky had given way to cloud so no sunbathing on the beach and I wasn't tempted into the water. Signed the log but in my excitement at an FTF I forgot to date it, doh!

As I didn't set off on the Overland Track until after 1pm, I wasn't sure whether there would be time to make the trip to Cradle Summit and still get down to Waterfall Valley hut before dark. But I decided to go for it anyway, and made it to the hut with about 10 minutes of daylight to spare, just as everyone else was going to bed. The summit was cloud-free as I started to climb, but by the time I got up there it had clouded over and there were no views. The already interesting climb was made more challenging by the widespread snow patches which meant that it wasn't possible to know whether the snow was covering a solid rock foothold or a crevice between rocks. A well deserved 4½ stars.

Have logged as a find (pending CO approval) even though I couldn't answer any of the questions as the information board wasn't there, and couldn't reach the published cache coordinates as the walkway to Bowen Falls is closed due to geological instability. Photo taken from the walkway outside the terminal.

After 3 rain-free days on the Milford track and a rain-free forecast for the following day, it didn't seem right to do the whole track without getting soaked at least once, so I braved the path around the back of the waterfall. Didn't get all the way round before getting driven back by the spray, but far enough to get completely soaked!

Visited this while chilling out in Glenorchy to recover from hiking. Sent answers to the owner. Brought Nanango for a visit to increase his cache count.

A beautiful day in Queenstown. I'd initially planned to climb Ben Lomond but was feeling too tired so decided on an easier day. Found W1-3 without too much difficulty after looking at the hints in the story and the clues, couldn't find W4 but managed to pick up W5 based on the clues; sadly couldn't persuade the ladies to give up their clue but went on to the end and guessed where to look based on the clues in the story and the comments in the logs of those people who found it without following all the clues. Sadly despite finding lots of interesting potential hiding places I wasn't able to find the cache. Enjoyed the ride along the walkway anyway.

Nice cache, good hiding place. Didn't find any trackables apart from Nanango who I've taken to help with his travels.

After a couple of days of fantastic weather I had a wet morning's wait for an afternoon bus, giving an opportunity for a brief visit to the cache.
