Logs for Luffness

14-Dec-17
Last year I successfully completed a yearly streak of caching, and had hung up my caching boots for months. I've been a fairly sporadic geocacher since, and have returned to Australia to visit family for Christmas. Walked over here from my sister's place at Lomas Circle, and went for a hunt. Took quite a few laps before I eventually found something that would vaguely go with the hint. All of Perth seems to be sand, sand, sand; so this did stick out.

#753 Thank you very much for the geocache. Took nothing, left nothing. Personal trackable dipped for mileage. [^]

#1 geocache found in Western Australia, #73rd found in Australia

16-Nov-16
Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, but had returned to Sydney to visit family. Today was our last day in Australia, so a quick trip out with our muggle nephew for our daily streak. Nephew Adam was really kind of finding a snake here to taunt Miss Luffness. No luck with snakes today, but the odd skink and a group of galahs. Quick and easy find, also the first trackable in months! Have taken it to continue its journey overseas.

#728 Thank you very much for the geocache. Took Lady Fines Kronjuwelen trackable, left nothing, signed the log. Personal trackable dipped for mileage. [^]

352nd day of current streak. 72nd geocache in Australia.

15-Nov-16
Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, but had returned to Sydney to visit family. Sadly, my brother had passed away whilst we were here, and today was his funeral. An excellent cache to spend a few moments on the clifftop and think of him. Geocaching provides all sorts of opportunities, our daily streak is great therapy.

#727 Thank you very much for the geocache. Took nothing, left nothing, signed the log. Personal trackable dipped for mileage. [^]

351st day of current streak. 71st geocache in Australia.

14-Nov-16
Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, but had returned to Sydney to visit family. We'd got up really early to go do the Sydney Fish Market tour, which was excellent. A quick trip up here, whilst burping Pipis in XO sauce (an unusal choice, I grant you). A very quick and easy find, many thanks for keeping our daily streak going.

#726 Thank you very much for the geocache. Took nothing, left nothing, signed the log. Personal trackable dipped for mileage. [^]

350th day of current streak. 70th geocache in Australia.

13-Nov-16
Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, but had returned to Sydney to visit family. We were visiting locally at Morgan Street, so it was a quick duck outside to go fish for this one. Didn't even bother hunting down the co-ordinates by 'phone, very easy if you've seen one like this before and got a good idea of likely ground zone. Signed log over another entry that has become completely illegible through dampness. Log dry today, but many previous pen written logs unreadable due to damage.

#725 Thank you very much for the geocache. Took nothing, left nothing, signed the log. Personal trackable dipped for mileage. [^]

349th day of current streak. 69th geocache in Australia.

12-Nov-16
Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, but had returned to Sydney to visit family. We were desperate to continue our daily streak of 347 days, and the caching day had gone poorly. We'd failed twice in Casino, Northern NSW before 8.30am; before enduring a 12 hour train journey to Central. We'd failed at a cache at Central about 8.40pm; and driven to our apartment in Maroubra. This was the closest option, so a 3 kilometre round walking trip from 9.30pm to 11pm to go hunt for a cache. Initially not an easy find, as most of the trees here are banksias - also not the easiest in the dark. Eventually the hint dropped and I saw something referenced in the clue. I've never been more relieved to put my hand on a cache container. Many many thanks for keeping us in the game for another day. Please accept a favourite point for saving us.

#724 Thank you very much for the geocache. Took nothing, left nothing, signed the log. Personal trackable dipped for mileage. [^]

348th day of current streak. 68th geocache in Australia.

Really frustrating caching day. Desperate to maintain a daily streak of 347 days, and I'd already had two failures in Casino, northern NSW, early in the morning. 12 hours by train to Central, and popped out here at 8.30pm. A ten minute search with no luck. Tired, frustrated and emotional, I nearly nutted the surly young guy who asked me for spare change four times. I eventually got one in Maroubra at 10.30pm - Phew!

So, so frustrated on this one. Pretty happy that I got the clue correct. Even with the GPSr swirling around, I spent about 40 minutes before the 08.20 train to Sydney came in - which I needed to catch. I searched everywhere I thought possible for a decent cache hide, especially with regards to the clue. Really lucky that I found a cache much much later that night to keep my daily streak going. Got quite a few scratches and pinpricks of blood from the search today. Sad

After spending 40 minutes at "Going Loco" whilst waiting for a train and failing to find there, it was a quick pop over here. No luck either, I was desperate for a cache for my daily streak, but it just wasn't going to happen. Only spent about five minutes in all, hunting the two or three probable ground zones.

For us this was the cache that got away. To start off, and really oddly, c:geo (an Android based App we use for caching) gave us completely the wrong co-ordinates: S 33 57.251, E 151 15.586. This, of course, is about 30 metres further northeasterly in to the sea where there were some spear fishermen operating today. Realising that these couldn't be the correct co-ordinates three of us searched for about thirty minutes in the heat before giving up. Too many hiding places to make it easy, especially when you're not sure of exactly where the ground zone is - even going by the hint pictures.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were staying a few days in Evans Head. Today we were extremely fortunate to be lent a pair of kayaks from a family friend, so the hunt was afoot for this tricky cache. Mr Luffness grew up on Bundjalung Road and he spent many happy years yabbie pumping, fishing and boating very near here. Bit of a hunt today for this one, until it finally clicked that as the island is completely covered at extreme tides, then the cache must be . . . . oh, hang on, there it is! Absolutely brilliant cache location, another well deserved favourite point. Continued on further up the river to Oyster Creek, and walked to the midden near Iron Gates too.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were staying a few days in Evans Head. Needing another cache for our daily streak, today was a trip down to Chinamen's Beach. Mr Luffness, who grew up in Evans Head, has always thought of this as his favourite local beach. Miss Luffness, a Brit, nearly picked up a bluebottle to look at it! Noooooooo! Hiked up over the bluff between Chinamen's and New Zealanders Beach to the old tick fence - amazing how far this has decayed. A quick and easy find here. Disappointed not to find any death adders here that locals always talk about.....

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were staying a few days in Evans Head. A few minutes spent working out the clues half by memory and half by Google. A quick and happy big tick from the geochecker. Raced to the ground zone with a couple of muggle relatives. They were amazed when I marched straight to the spot and picked the cache up. Easy once I'd spotted the telltale camouflage. Many thanks for a great cache and one of my favourite spots. Any easy favourite point for the puzzle and location.

#721 Thank you very much for the geocache. Took nothing, left nothing, signed the log. Personal trackable dipped for mileage. [^]

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were staying a few days in Evans Head. Mr Luffness grew up here and had spent time camping on Joggly in the past, and many trips down to the Rain Cave. A quick and easy find here today, favourite point for the great views and the nostalgic value.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were heading to Evans Head from Port Macquarie. Took way too long over this one, with searching all the wrong possible places. Eventually spied it from afar - another one for the daily streak.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were taking a break in Port Macquarie. Took a while to find the right path in, and quickly spied the vaguely natural container. Favourite point for the views and a great container in a muggle central location.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were visiting family in Sydney for a week. Needing a break from the RPA (very ill brother), it was a quick break out through the uni to find this one.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were visiting family in Sydney for a week. Basing ourselves in Coogee, I'd left it very late to go hunting for a cache to extend our daily streak. Found about 8pm in darkness, very difficult to sign log by light from my phone in a blustery wind. Replaced as found.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were visiting family in Sydney for a week. Sadly we were visiting my terminally ill brother in the RPA, so needed a mental and physical break away. Lovely hike through Sydney University and a quick and easy find here.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia for family visit. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and had a very brief stop in Goulburn. Very busy here today, and initially I took the hint too literally and went hunting around an anatomical feature of the ram. Soon realised my error, and widened the search. Many thanks, another one for the daily streak!

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia for family visit. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were spending a couple of days in Thredbo. We'd made plans months ago to try and climb Mt Kosciusko, and were initially worried about the depth of snow on top after one of the best snow seasons in memory up here. Thankfully we were able to hire waterproof boots and snowshoes in Thredbo, and successfully made the trek up. From Rawson's Pass we followed everyone else making a beeline for the summit as the normal track was too deep in snow. Embarrassingly up the steep climb I slipped, faceplanted in the snow and slid 20 feet back towards Rawsons. Gained the summit eventually and thought I'd have to try for the EarthCache here. I was overjoyed to find this cache, especially as it's the first find in months. It will also probably remain as my highest cache for a very long time. Huge thanks rustymac - an easy favourite point!

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia for family visit. We were on a road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were spending a couple of days in the Beechworth area. Yesterday we did a section of the Murray to Mountains rail trail from Beechworth to Milawa, a brilliant roll down the hill with lots of stops at the wineries and fooderies on offer. This was a quick cache to keep our daily streak going - fairly easy, and loved the iconic Australian culinary geocaching container!

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia for family visit. We'd started a road trip yesterday from Melbourne to Brisbane, and were spending a couple of days in the Beechworth area to do a section of the Murray to Mountains rail trail from Beechworth to Milawa. First stop of the day at Pennyweight, nothing like sampling a dozen wines at 10am with still 30 odd kilometres to go. A fairly easy find here today, kept getting buzzed by many gorgeous crimson rosellas.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia for family visit. We'd been in Toowoomba for a couple of days, and had flown to Melbourne this morning to start a road trip back to Brisbane. We'd toyed with the idea of finding a cache near Tullamarine, but way too busy down there. Instead, this was our first major stop of the day. A quick and easy find here, loved all the Kelly paraphernalia around the town; especially the spooky stumps just up on the corner of Siege Street. This will probably remain our most southernmost 'cache find for quite a while. Many thanks DazRascal.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia for family visit. We'd been in Toowoomba for a couple of days, and we were keen to extend our daily streak. Geocaching is the best mental and physical hobby for staving off jetlag. A quick and easy find here today as we listened to a whipbird searching for his lady friend (she replied eventually!)

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia for family visit. We'd been fortunate to find "Wildlife Crossing" yesterday another angloj 'cache nearby, and we were keen to extend our daily streak. After yesterday's caching I wore decent shoes. Despite being Aussie born, twenty years in the UK has made me a bit nervous about hunting through dry leaf litter. Got there eventually, all OK.

Normally based in the United Kingdom, Team Luffness had made it over to Australia for family visit. Venturing out from Mr Luffness' sister's house nearby, this was a quick and simple find to keep our streak going. It was also a gentle reminder of the differences between British and Australian 'caching - wear good shoes and be more careful poking around!

I'd been in Australia for a month, and had spent time with family between Toowoomba, Sydney, and Lismore. Today was my last day in Australia, and after an early start I was waiting for my nephew to signal his availability to be visited in nearby St Lucia on Swann Road. In the early 1990's I was a University of Queensland student and lived predominantly around here - Taringa, Indooroopilly, and even across the river on Brisbane Corso at Yeronga. (My girlfriend's uncle at the time had a property there that he was renting to us). We even used to try and drive golf balls across the river to about here, but were never successful. Anyway, short walk from The Esplanade, I'd never realised that there were paths here. I was treading carefully, as having been British for the last 20 years I'm a bit reticent about poking around in long grass and fallen branches in the middle of a warm summer's day. No problems today though, a swift and easy find.

I'd been in Australia for nearly a month, and was spending time at my sister's place in Toowoomba (she's Bloodnock McGurgle). Today we were popping down to her partner's family in Flagstone Creek, and she was quite up for finding a geocache to add to my daily streak. I was initially worried about letterbox caches as I felt they were too intrusive to go rifling through someone's letterbox. Now, after doing a few in Australia, I realise they are brilliant fun and often quite quirky. I'm going to have to get my own letterbox cache and stamp. Easy find, thankfully it's quite different to your official letterbox.

Today we were popping down to her partner's family in Flagstone Creek, and she was quite up for finding a geocache to add to my daily streak. We'd already found the letterbox geocache at Postman's Ridge, and she was keen to try for a couple more. Popped off the Warrego Highway to go seeking for this one, my sister informs me that this rest stop is locally known as something very very un-PC which is best not repeating here. A couple of muggles frying lunch on a portable barbeque about 5-10 metres away meant this was always going to be difficult. And so it was, no luck today. Possibly a harder difficulty than 2? (I'm just being a lightweight).

I'd already found the letterbox geocache at Postman's Ridge, but had failed at the Helidon Rest Stop. Sister's muggle partner very quickly realised the relevance of this geocache's name as a hint. I had a very careful poke around, especially due to the presence of wasps - I've already been stung this holiday whilst geocaching in Chinchilla. Thankfully, a swift and easy find.

I'd been in Australia for nearly three weeks, and had been spending the past two days with my Dad in the Lismore/Evans Head area. Today we were relocating to my sister's place in Toowoomba (she's Bloodnock McGurgle). To make a decent drive of it we headed up through the Tweed Range and the Border Ranges National Park. This bit of country has always held deep nostalgia for our family, thanks to many day trips, and occasional camps at Sheepstation Creek and Forest Tops. Lovely drive today, with minimal traffic, lots of sightings of crimson rosellas, and hearing heaps of bellbirds. I used to use the Lions Road a lot when at uni in Brisbane to travel back home to Evans Head, as the highway down through the Gold Coast is so boring. Like a lot of other logs here, the co-ordinates are definitely out, I found the cache at S 28 19.909, E 152 58.371. Loved the rollercoaster trip down the Running Creek valley afterwards, this is a brilliant road.

I'd been in Australia for nearly three weeks, and had been staying with my brother (Sunnyparko) and his family in Castle Hill, Sydney. I'd driven up to Lismore over the past 2 days to stay with my Dad. Today, we popped down to visit Evans Head. The town is deeply nostalgic for both of us, as we both spent over 25 years living on Bundjalung Road. As a child/teenager I used to wander through the thick heath scrub from Bundjalung Road to the Bombing Range Road. In those days, this gravel road was open for a few kilometres before the gate. Slightly odd to see it blocked off here now with a gate. Been down the Bombing Range a few times (I had some schoolmates with family in the RAAF), all the way down to Jerusalem Creek. No problems with the find, it's plainly visible even with its camouflage.

I'd been in Australia for nearly three weeks, and had been staying with my brother (Sunnyparko) and his family in Castle Hill, Sydney. I was meant to have driven from his place to my Dad's place in Lismore yesterday, but was never going to make the full distance due to a really Big Wet (especially around the Hunter) and a late start. I'd made it as far as Port Macquarie yesterday and was continuing to amble along the coast today, exploring parts that I hadn't seen before. A very brief look at South West Rocks today, which looks lovely and deserves more time to explore it fully. Stopped here for a quick cache 'n' dash to keep up my daily streak. A young family were fishing here on Spencer Creek, but they ignored me completely. Very swift find, especially with the hint. Loved the hide.

I'd been in Australia for nearly three weeks, and had been staying with my brother (Sunnyparko) and his family in Castle Hill, Sydney. I was meant to be translocating from his place to my Dad's place in Lismore today, but was never going to make the full distance due to a really Big Wet (especially around the Hunter) and a late start. Ambling along I decided to detour via The Lakes Way and had a late lunch nearby. Needing a cache today to extend my streak I looked around locally, and this little beauty popped up. To be honest, it was dead easy after seeing a picture of the camouflaged container on a previous log. Enjoyed the Ground Zone and the hide, though nearly dropped myself and/or the cache in the river. Favourite point awarded because I'm happy it's my personal #400, and I grew up near oyster leases and pelicans on the Evans River.

I'd been in Australia for two weeks, and was staying with my brother (Sunnyparko) and his family nearby in Castle Hill. Needing a cache today to extend my streak I popped out for a hunt. I'd already found a few geocaches locally over the past few days, and so was starting to get the feel for the district. I carefully looked at lots of local options, to try and work out which would be the easiest to do as a cache and dash. Today Sydney was experiencing a "Big Wet" and there was no let up in the heavy rain all day. Parked the car below, and raced up the path. No problems with the ground zone and hide, I've seen quite a few of this style before. Got back to the car absolutely drenched, this attempt at a year long streak of daily caching may kill me. Replaced as found.

I'd already found a few geocaches locally over the past few days, and so was starting to get the feel for the district. Took seconds to locate the groundzone, but a bit longer to realise what and where the container was. A little soggy inside as the lid was partially off. Replaced as found.

I'd been in Australia for two weeks, and was staying with my brother (Sunnyparko) and his family nearby in Castle Hill. Needing a cache today to extend my streak I popped out for a hunt. I'd found four caches locally yesterday, so was starting to get the feel for the district. Took seconds to locate the groundzone, to spy the cache container and retrieve it. I'd never seen these cache containers before, but they seem to make up the majority of my caching experience in Sydney. Replaced as found.

#397 Thank you very much for the geocache. Took nothing, left nothing, signed the log. Trackables dipped for mileage. [^]

I'd been in Australia for two weeks, and was staying with my brother (Sunnyparko) and his family nearby in Castle Hill. We'd had the good fortune to be able to spend most of the New Year period in the centre of Sydney and were recuperating from the excesses of the festivities. Needing a cache today to extend my streak we'd popped out for a hunt. We'd had success at one of the nearby Water Tower geocaches, and also two on the nearby Quarry Creek so we decided to keep going. Sunnyparko had already hunted here unsuccessfully with family before. Within five metres of the ground zone I spotted the geocache container, it's easy to identify with a bit of experience. No problems with the find and hide.

Sunnyparko had already unsuccessfully looked for this one before, he's still recovering from recent back surgery, so we took the minor rock scramble a little gingerly. No way is this a terrain 1.5; it's got to be at least a 2.0-3.0 for the little bit of rock scrambling involved. On crouching the container was in plain view, as mentioned before the cap is loose with a broken lock.

So many possible hiding spots at the Ground Zone, I think I got lucky spying the corner of the cache container. Not the sort of country and conditions that you want to spend a lot of time with your hands down holes. Hot rocks, deep crevices, lots of leaf and bark litter - maybe I'm just being a paranoid Pommie. Thankfully the only thing I disturbed today was the odd lizard, some nice skinks here.

Sunnyparko had already unsuccessfully looked for this one before, but today he marched straight up to the Ground Zone, and said is this it? It was, very simple hide and find. Container OK but log damp - still serviceable but may benefit from a mini ziplock bag to protect the log.

I'd been in Australia for a week, staying first at my sister's place in Toowoomba (she's Bloodnock McGurgle), before relocating yesterday to my brother's family (Sunny Parkos) in Castle Hill. We'd had the extraordinary good fortune to be gifted a couple of days at a Sydney City Centre apartment to spend the New Year celebrations. Today was a day of kicking back at home quietly getting used to 2016. In the mid-afternoon I ducked out to find a cache to keep my daily streak going. Ample parking nearby and a very obvious Ground Zone. Took less than a minute to find the geocache with the easy clue.

I'd been in Australia for a week, staying first at my sister's place in Toowoomba (she's Bloodnock McGurgle), before relocating yesterday to my brother's family (Sunny Parkos) in Castle Hill. We'd had the extraordinary good fortune to be gifted a couple of days at a nearby local apartment to spend the New Year celebrations. I'd left it late today to try and find the last geocache of the year and keep my streak going. I had geonephew in tow. We'd already failed to find "Great North Walk No. 1 - GC29HTP," mainly due to some poor hunting and a couple of police manning a barricade nearby due to New Year's Eve. We'd also had no chance to go for "Not the Harbour Bridge - GC2VZ2D" as it was completely blocked off for NYE. With slight desperation we headed to this multicache. No problems with the clues, and GeoChecker confirmed our co-ordinates. Took about 20 minutes to find as the container was located a good 15-20 metres away from listed co-ordinates - it's the hassle of caching in a city centre with high buildings. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

We'd had the extraordinary good fortune to be gifted a couple of days at a local apartment to spend the New Year celebrations. Needing a geocache today to continue my streak, we trooped out to give this one a go. There are very few traditional geocache containers in Sydney City Centre, and mercifully this multicache was pretty easy. No problems deciphering the clues, and swiftly to Ground Zone. Amazed myself with finding the container at the very first grab. Love urban caches for the subversive and stealthy factor.

I'd already found "Neo doesn't work here anymore - GC2WT25" this afternoon, but this one was an easy nab. I laid down on the pavement near Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for the picture with my GPSr (Google Nexus 5 phone). Nearly got trodden on by the heavy crowds. I nominate "The Hound of the Baskervilles" as one of his literary works.
