Here is a different kind of dam for you. This is a low head dam on the skunk river in Ames, Iowa.
A low head dam is a manmade barrier in the river that causes the river to drop several feet in a very small distance.
The altitude is 890 feet. The pictures show my gps on the plaque for the dam, and then a picture of the actual dam.
You can learn more about low head dams at this site http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/lowhead.htm

Not only is this sign faded, one of the letters has fallen partway off. This is the old Kelley's TV store in Ames, Iowa. This is also a flatiron building (one end of the store is much more narrow than the other end).
I grabbed this one on a chilly day right before Christmas. It's sort of hard to tell from the pictures, but the side of the building that I am facing is much more narrow than the back of the building. I think it was built this way to accomodate the railroad tracks.

This is on the Lucullan's building in Downtown Ames, Iowa. This is a beautiful mural that honors some of the city's founders.

This is the Lincoln Lodge Motel in East Ames, Iowa. It is located on the Lincoln Highway, just East of Duff Avenue.
I grabbed this on a cold snowy day. It's not far off the highway in Ames, Iowa. Thanks to fishpounder for taking the pictures!
