Logs for Mr Emu
01-Dec-18
The Cache has been replaced in the original location - another magnetic Eclipse tin covered in black gaffer tape. I re-ran the Wherigo on the iPhone (first time in years!), and as painfully clunky as it is to wend your way through the menu items, it still works fine! The structure at the starting point has changed since the huge library renovation, but everything else in the park is still there. It is probably best to complete the hint-code activity to get the final location, to minimise lingering in the hiding-spot area. Have fun!
*(By the way, the building overhang near the cache is sometimes used by people sleeping rough. Please be aware of this when retrieving/replacing the cache.)

Thanks to Bushfire for keeping an eye on this cache, and letting me know that some changes to the hide location have resulted in the cache going missing. I’ll attend to this as soon as I get a chance. Mr Emu.

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend, but I'll take this opportunity as a (long-retired) geocacher to wish Laurie all the best! We met early on in my caching career (~2007), and enjoyed the race to both hunt and place caches over the same couple of years.
(I actually can't believe you're turning 80 already; how time flies!)
All the best, and I wish you many happy caches in the future!
Cheers, Mr Emu (Peter)

The "Flight of Fancy" Wherigo cache has been replaced this morning after a report from an experienced cacher. Indeed, it had gone missing!
Welcome to all for this weekend's Mega Event at Anglesea!

A quick check was done after a number of "Didn't find it" logs in recent months. While happy to see that the cache was exactly where it was meant to be, Mr Emu took the opportunity to exchange the old Eclipse tin with a 5" x 1" black painted plastic tube that is weather-proof. No need to worry about the log getting a bit damp in winter. There's even a new pen in the cache; if it goes missing, blame the previous visitor.
The extensive on-going building works around the library do NOT yet prevent geocachers from getting around all of the waypoints and completing this cache, so happy hunting!
*Once again, this cache is attached by a magnet. There's your extra hint!

Found today by Mr Emu & Demon Boy @ 2.20 p.m., GAFF3 http://wiki.geocaching.com.au/wiki/GAFF . After having lunch at one of the nearby cafés, we visited the impressive new structure for a look. It turned out to be well worth the visit. We don't get over this way very often, so much to the chagrin of the NGS we also had a quick hunt around for "360°" while in the area.
Fortunately a short hunt revealed the cache, nicely hidden in what might be the only logical spot. Thanks for the adventure Bushfire, nice to have the chance to visit this one at last.

Finally, over 4 years after our "partially-successful" attempt on 10 March 2007, Mr Emu & Demon Boy were passing by without the NGS (Non-Geocaching Spouse) and could try again to find this tricky cache.
We knew we'd have our work cut out for us, and I was very grateful for the presence of Demon Boy, who found it @11:20 after a fairly short hunt.
He was 8-years-old when we last visited and full of enthusiasm for our new-at-the-time geocaching adventures. He recently turned 13, and it's been pretty hard to get him interested in geocaching for quite some time now. He said this challenging Romax cache was the sort of cache he liked doing, and that alone made the stop on this wet & windy, 7C day well worth it.
Our thanks to Romax

Found by Mr Emu @2:00 pm (TNLN)
I saw a cache had been placed at a favorite spot and decided to take a look. Spotted the cache after a short hunt due to the BRIGHT BLUE lid being very visible in the afternoon sun. Otherwise quite well-hidden.
I used the iPhone, not the Garmin, so cannot comment on the accuracy of the coordinates. *EDIT: A later check on Google Maps suggests the coords should be S.338 & E.651, about 5m ESE of the published location. Although not a real problem here, a cliff-top site is not somewhere to be inaccurate with coordinates
(A hint for the hider: your container will likely break down in the outdoors within a few months, even where it is hidden - and in winter! Perhaps consider using a Sistema, and even painting it black - at least on the lid).
Thanks for the cache - a great view from here indeed.

This is one of my first "I wasn't geocaching, but spotted it on the GPS as I was driving by" caches! I was on my trusty 250cc Yamaha trailbike doing one of my Open Street Maps missions - this time to add both Norman Track and Wickham Track to the mapped 4WD routes in the area. I've added quite a large part of the SurfCoast and Otways to OSM now, and it has fitted well with the way geocaching often takes you off the beaten track.
It's a miracle that I still had the caches on my GPS because I haven't cached in a while. As I transitted between tracks I glanced down and saw a familiar icon just off the main road and went to investigate! A nice diversion and a good chance for a break. Thanks for the cache vp4 - I enjoyed the geo-refresher, and was glad you'd converted the series to traditional. I also photographed the hints, just in case I ever get to the others in the series.

Today's second "I wasn't geocaching, but spotted it on the GPS as I was driving by" cache as I continued on my Open Street Maps mission. Once again I was glad you'd converted the series to traditional, and photographed the hint (just in case). Thanks for the cache vp4 - I thought I'd gotten lucky with the first one, and finding a second as I drove by was a bonus.

Being one of those cachers that have visited a couple of times but not logged a DNF, I thought that with my Demon Boy side kick as a decoy I'd be able to have a "real look" today (my excuse for not logging DNFs when I had visited dressed in all my motorcycle clobber twice previously). Well, no excuses today. We looked, we poked, we pulled, we prodded, we put our hands where we knew we shouldn't without gloves(!), all to no avail. Finally, with Demon Boy lying on the deck looking (and feeling) like a corpse, he cajoled me into calling our friend (or is it nemesis?) Bushfire for a helping hand. Luckily for us the cache owner was available and in the mood to help, because there was no way we would have found this most excellently-hidden cache otherwise. Another Bushfire masterpiece! It's a very elegant cache whose simplicity - when you (ahem) "find" it - belies the imagination and thought that has gone into it. Well done, and thanks for the generous help Bushfire! A great cache to celebrate #650!
*The log was completely dry thanks to the o-ring in cache container, even though it was obvious that there was plenty of moisture around.
TNLN (there was no room to, even if we'd wanted).

A change in the weather slowed us down, with the wind swinging more southerly and rain starting. We sat at Point Addis a while chatting until it cleared enough for us to gather the clues. Then it was back along the road to collect the cache. I was only using the iPhone geocaching app today, and it was a bit arduous for this old brain getting in the swing of adding a new location's coordinates for a multi. Got there in the end, although Demon Boy was feeling a bit off from the stuffy car at this stage. He obviously fares better out of the car rather than in it!
A quick retrieve at the final location, and we were soon back on the road to Anglesea. Thanks for another very enjoyable cache juc_cacher. Nice to see how you worked around the Parks Victoria "no geocaching" restrictions.

An area we have visited before (girls netball, some years ago). What we had never done before was get out of the car, walk up the path a little and explore the very pleasant grass-tree rich bushland. We particularly liked the way the wind has blown the fringes on the grass trees on the dirt, creating a circular broom effect around the base of many of them.
No Skippys around at this time of day - they were sensibly having a siesta somewhere, no doubt. Thanks for bringing us to this nice area juc_cacher.

With small surf and a strong onshore wind, even Demon Boy wasn't that keen for a surf today and consented to seeking a few geocaches - for the first time in a long time. Tomorrow will be 4 years since our first cache find, so it's a bit of an anniversary caching day too.
This cache was the closest to home and in an area we are quite familiar with. In a recent phone call Bushfire inadvertently gave us a tip as to where to stand to spot this cache and some idea of what we might be looking for. Just as well really, because I'd doubt if we would have found this very nicely hidden cache any time soon without the accidental help.
Well done juc_cacher; thanks for this excellent hide in a fantastic location. Always great to have an excuse to head down the steps again.

After a couple of juc_cacher caches closer to home, it was time to seek this fairly recent cache by our old friend Bushfire. After pulling up at the first possible parking spot to check the distance (and knowing where the next one was) we soon opted to move to the second, much closer parking spot. A quick walk down the management vehicle track led us to a previously unknown oasis. After all of the recent rain this place had quite a lot of water in it, and we got another "Geez, I didn't know that was here" moment from geocaching! A short stroll along a narrower track and we soon had the well-placed and camoed geocache in hand.
Thanks for bringing us to W.P. 3 Bushfire - a surprising journey of discovery in our local area. As we often do these days, it was "Took: Nil; Left: Nil".
*Demon Boy was feeling better after his queazy feelings earlier in the morning. He admitted it was due to being distracted by having to watch out for the huge red bullants!

After a quick lunch in Airey's Inlet, it was time for a final couple of "quick" caches on our way home. Well, that was the plan anyway, but this cache became a bit of an epic for our day. We arrived to find the park mostly empty - just two couples on a picnic bench on the way to the Inverlochy. We strolled around, and after a fairly short time were able to retrieve the cache (with the help of the hint). So far so good. I opened up the tightly packed cache and was just putting our stamp in the log book when my lookout - Demon Boy - announced that people were coming. The question "How far away?" was answered with "About 50 m". Before I could finish signing the log and return it I heard kids squealing, and my lookout's warning - "They're running!" Suddenly - we were surrounded by 4 kids, and two burly Dad's soon came around the corner and sat close by. No problems, we've done this before - we'll just wait for the right opportunity. Well, the opportunity never came. Even more kids and families arrived, and within minutes the previously-deserted playground had 15 kids and their owners swarming over it.
Plan B - go find another cache and return: Yep back after an hour away - and even more of the savages and their keepers - 25 of 'em! Tried waiting, formulated a cunning plan - but we just didn't want to risk the cache.
Plan C - take cache and come back later: Would you believe it? When we came back right on the mossie-filled dusk, there was not only a Dad and his kid in the playground, but a couple of European bicycle tourists were setting up their no-cost, stealth-camp in the BBQ shelter near the playground! Unbelievable... but at least our pro-tactics now had a chance. When the Dad and son were finally carried off to the mosquitoes lair a covert replacement was made. Phew.
Score: Mr Emu & Demon Boy 1 (cache): Ankle Biters 40 : Mosquitoes 2
Thanks for the cache. Nice idea, but highlights the potential problems with a playground cache!
Took: Spider (couldn't jam it back in cache); Left: Emulator pathtag

I was originally planning to "Temporarily Disable" the caches in this series while I reconfigured each of the first four puzzles (E.M.U.s 0, 1, 2 & 3 were confirmed as within the boundaries of the Great Otway National Park) and moved the caches to acceptable nearby locations. As it turns out I've spent (wasted!) the last week of my holidays trying to do just that, but am not at all satisfied with the results. In many cases the point of the cache was a unique viewpoint that I wanted to share - not something that is easily substituted. The puzzle workarounds were starting to look a bit ridiculous, and although E.M.U.s 4, 5 & 6 were in the Anglesea Heath and could have stayed, the series is pretty-much "broken". I don't even want to talk about the cursed E.M.U. 7 !
I am very sorry to disappoint the cachers who had recently convinced me to keep this well-appreciated series alive. I tried, but after the last week's effort I've decided that it's time to retire this specific series. Don't worry, the unique containers will be cleaned and freshened-up. You never know when the "caching muse" will strike!
Thanks to all of the cachers who attempted the puzzles and made the trek to the caches. I really appreciated all of the generous comments in your logs.
*** If there are any cachers who found at least three (3) caches in this series and have not yet claimed their "pathtag bonus", please get in contact with me as soon as possible with your preferred mailing address. (Now that I've got the logbooks in hand, don't worry if you can't find the "verification codes" - I can verify claims.) ***
*One final comment: in the process of collecting all of the containers today I was once again disappointed to see all the signs from our fellow citizens who don't adhere to Parks Victoria rules e.g. multiple well-worn (and illegal) mountain bike single-track created in National Park, people walking German Shepherd dogs off-leash in bushland in National Park (where on-leash is acceptable), rubbish strewn through carparks and bushland etc. My faith-in-humanity meter is lying idle on the "0" mark at the moment...
At least I got some good exercise. Those caches weigh almost 7kg, and I think I covered quite a few km of bush tracks.

The curse of E.M.U. 7 returns for one last effort!
As can be seen from recent logs, there are access and accompanying safety issues - as well as clear environmental issues (regeneration area) - associated with this accursed E.M.U..
I am obliged to disable the cache immediately, but for those seeking to knock this off their list I will leave the container in-place - as promised - at least until Saturday 08 January 2011. It is up to you to find a safe access route (a walk downhill from the now-blocked-off Messmate Track?).
Soon this will all be behind us...

1. A quick note for anybody who may be interested in attempting the E.M.U. series. I have altered my recent archiving plans (at request) so that all eight of these caches (#'s 0-7) will remain active up to - and including - Saturday 08 January 2011. After that date, I have no option but to archive the caches permanently.
* I am quite happy to provide guidance/hints for those that need help, but you will still need to do some work (and walking!) in the end.
2. A visit to drop some TBs today revealed that extensive land restoration is taking place near this cache. The previously bare earth looks very nice now.

As noted in my updated "disable" log, after considerable thought (and persuasion by another cacher) I have decided to re-enable this cache indefinitely.

As mentioned previously, I no longer think that the placement of this cache is appropriate. I was amazed at how much the grass has grown since a place this cache - I suspect it would be a bit "snakey" on a hot day.
Container has been gathered, including a "cache monster" path tag for my collection.

The cache has now been removed, but I will leave the listing ""live" to allow a cacher that wrote in the logbook recently the opportunity to log their visit on GC.com.
A quick "archiving road trip" down the Great Ocean Road this morning to collect the container. Huge surf and quiet roads.
