Continuing on my quest to find the oldest active cache in each state brings me here today. I timed it so that I could also attend the Birthday Event cache. This one makes 42 states done. I will get 4 more on this trip and hopefully finish the remaining 4 this fall. I am glad to see that there is a lot of interest in keeping this one going despite the problems. Took a Coin to move, discovered a few others and left my token and card. Thanks for the cache.

Driving here from New Albany, Indiana where I stayed last night was quite a challenge. Lots of miles on twisty back roads. But then you get here and it's a drive by cache!!! I am trying to find the oldest still active cache in each state so that is why I came here today. I am on my way to Dallas for Geowoodstock IV. I met the cache owner`s son and we chatted for a minute. TN left a duck keychain and the Ride Me Home TB. Thanks for the cache.

Just off Route 125
North Andover, MA
I was on my way to Haverhill for a basketball tournament but had to do this cache as I have had these coords for some time and the locationless caches are going away soon.
It took me a few minutes to get the GPS to settle on the coords but they finally did.
Thanks for the cache.

This very beautiful sculpture was dedicated on August 19,2001. If Solid-Rock-Seekers can drive 100 miles then I can drive 136 miles just to find this Christmas Box Angel. It is the last one to be logged in New England as NH does not have one. ( Will have to look into that! ) I have had this on my list for some time and of course waited until near the end of locationless caches to go do it. I will miss these caches. Waypointing is just not the same for me. Thanks for the cache and learning about these beautiful sculptures.

Imagine my surprise after I checked into the hotel with my OAT tour group and opened my balcony window and looked down onto the giant chess set. I remembered that this was a locationless cache so got the coords and photos so that I could log it once back home. This one is at the Porta Hotel Del Lago in Panajachel, Guatemala on Lake Atitlan. There are some physical caches on this lake and I was FTF on one of them. Thanks for the fun cache. I have had it in the back of my mind for some time.

Continuing my drive north I crossed over many more of the Conde bridges. Here at the Alsea Bay Bridge I stopped to visit the interpretive center where they have a very nice exhibit devoted to Conde McCullough. Any one doing this cache or interested in these bridges would find lots of information. They even have a video put out by ODOT that shows the replacement bridge being built and a segment on some of the other Conde bridges. It mentioned that Conde was responsible for designing or approving 900 bridges. OK I promise no more logs.

Off Snake Hill Road
Ayer, Massachusetts
The spot is in the woods about .16 miles from the road and 450 feet from the Amtrak train line. It looks like it would be a swampy wet area in the spring. I have recently done two confluence caches but decided to find a new spot for this cache. Thanks for the interesting number cache.

Got the OK to log this one. I started it back in Dec 2002 and got much wrong back then. I kinda sat on it for a long time until recently when I brought it up to Tim of thePetersPack. He started working on it and gave me a finishing clue. But I don't see his find log yet?? I went in the wrong direction in the beginning because of a web site that put my mind into a "this must be it" frame which it wasn't. I also had the unique opportunity to meet "Don" when my company did some work for his home in Maine. Thanks for a cache that can be done without leaving home, and has subject matter which I am interested in.

New York State Museum
Albany NY
I'm FIRST for a locationless cache!! I have had my eye on this one for a long time. Internet search never turned anything up as these units predate the technological revolution. I finally did the old fashioned detective work last month and got here today. The coords are for the main entrance of the museum. My research discovered the following:
The units were originally placed in service in the early 1930's and were removed 50 years later in the early 1980's when a remodeling was done at the Exchange. The old units were refurbished to their original condition (removal of monitors and other electronic items) and sent out and installed in their display locations in the same time period. I have a list of 12 places where they were sent. 1 place may not have displayed it, and 1 other place has it currently in storage until Sep 2005 due to a renovation.
This was an interesting and fun cache to do. The museum was also a great place to spend a few hours today as it has many other fascinating exhibits, especially the new one on 9-11. Thanks for the cache.

Portland Head Light
1000 Shore Road
Cape Elizabeth, Maine
Portland Head has long protected Portland and the adjacent area. Cape Elizabeth residents were deeply committed to American independence from British rule. In 1776, the new Town of Cape Elizabeth posted a guard of eight soldiers at Portland Head to warn citizens of coming British attacks.
In 1787, the General Court of Massachusetts (the Massachusetts legislature) provided $750 to begin construction of a lighthouse. In 1790, when the United States Government took over the responsibility of all lighthouses, Congress appropriated $1,500 for its completion. The original tower measured 72' from base to lantern deck and was lit with 16 whale oil lamps. It was first lit on January 10, 1791.
Construction of the first Keeper's Quarters began in 1790 as the result of a contract signed by Massachusetts Governor John Hancock. A one story dwelling built to replace the first keeper's house was erected in 1816. It measured 34' x 20' with two rooms, a cellar and a porch in the rear.
By 1864 a 4th order Fresnel lens and a cast iron staircase were installed.
By 1865, the tower was raised 20' and a 2nd order Fresnel lens was installed. A portion of this lens may now be seen at the Museum at Portland Head Light. Except for a period between1883 and1885, this lens was in the lighthouse until 1958.
Late on Christmas Eve in 1886, the three masted bark Annie C. Maguire struck the ledge at Portland Head. Keeper Joshua Strout, his son, wife, and volunteers rigged an ordinary ladder as a gangplank between the shore and the ledge the ship was heeled against. Captain O'Neil, the ship's master, his wife, two mates, and the nine man crew clambered onto the ledge and then to safety . The cause of the wreck is puzzling since visibility was not a problem. Members of the crew reported they plainly saw Portland Light before the disaster and are unable to account for same.
The current Keepers' Quarters building was constructed in 1891 as a two story duplex. Until 1989, it was home to the head and assistant lighthouse keepers and their families.
Portland Head Light was the responsibility of the United States Department of the Treasury from 1790 to 1852 when management was transferred to the US Lighthouse Board. The Board was reorganized into the Bureau of Lighthouses in 1910. In 1939, aids to navigation became the responsibility of the United States Coast Guard. On August 7th, 1989, Petty Officer Davis Simpson struck the US flag for the last time at the decommissioning ceremony recognizing the automation of the lighthouse. The property was leased in 1990 to the Town of Cape Elizabeth. Three years later, through the efforts of United States Senator George Mitchell, the property was deeded to the Town. The United States Coast Guard maintains the actual light and the fog signal, but the remainder of the property is managed by the Town of Cape Elizabeth.

over the Ashuelot River
This twin arch structure, built without mortar and sustained solely by expert shaping of its archstones, is typical of a unique style of bridge construction employed in the Contoocook River Valley in the first half of the Nineteenth Century. These bridges are a significant part of our American architectural heritage. (Info from NH Historical marker)
