Logs for mmcgr

20-Jul-17
We made the find at 1230 and got back to the vehicle just before the skies opened up with a summer thunderstorm. Only got a few drops on us. The drive out was a different story; torrents were coming down and lightning was striking nearby. The stream crossing was easier than expected and, although there were bugs, they were tolerable. Signed log and took the Mardi Gras beads for Minnie's vast collection. Left a couple of Where's George bills. Thanks for keeping this venerable cache going.

Sara and Nicole were great and made us feel very welcome as they showed us the Groundspeak HQ. Nice folks, both of them. Thanks for the tour and the coins. Forgot to bring the geocoin we meant to drop, so just discovered the trackables that were there and didn't retrieve any. Signed the logbook and left an origami-folded Where's George bill. Took a glass drop thing. mmcgr proved once again that he isn't photogenic, but Minnie is. Thanks very much for allowing us to visit and for your part in keeping geocaching a pleasant activity. This completes the triad for us.

We spotted this guy while going after a traditional cache. It sits outside a storage company located in Chula Vista, a suburb of San Diego. Thanks, Faithwalker & DaMama, for this locationless. We'll sorely miss them when they're gone.

Target #42, Did He Do It?:
Instead of trying for a name connection like several others, we chose the grave of a man executed for his crimes, which would have been a fitting end for our dear Mr. Simpson.

This graveyard is the Catholic Graveyard in Old Town State Historical Park, located where San Diego was founded and which preserves many of the City's original buildings. Oddly, the marker is in the cemetary but the body itself was buried outside the wall. It's most likely that the local priest wouldn't allow a convicted murderer to be buried on holy ground.

The second grave caught or eye on the way out and isn't really part of the find but we thought it was interesting.

We have two signs because we teamed up on this and both wanted a say. Joefrog, thanks for this target.

This is in San Diego on the the edge of Pacific Highway at the Washington Street exit. If the coordinates had been just a couple of feet east, they would have been in 60 mph traffic. We took the required GPS photo plus one in each of the compass directions from ground zero. Thanks, Web-ling, for this enjoyable locationless cache. It's a shame they're going away; we'll miss them.

Target 40, I Want To Ride:
This historic carousel is located in San Diego's Seaport Village, on the bayfront near downtown.

The carousel is a recent addition to Seaport Village. Even though it was built in 1895, it's newer than the carousel it replaced and which was at this location for many years. That one was auctioned off a couple of years ago when a bank bought Seaport Village.

Both the current carousel and its predecessor were hand-carved by the same maker, Charles Looff. This historic carousel is truely a standout. Plaques in the photos outline the history of this carousel and of its maker.

Thanks, Joefrog, for another interesting target. Too bad they'll all be gone soon; we'll miss them.

This octagonal building is located in San Diego's Seaport Village and houses an 1890's vintage carousel listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Thanks, TeamMoehrke, for this locationless cache. We'll miss them when they're gone.

This is the Surf Bowl in southern Californa's City of Oceanside. Located on the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 101) about 45 miles notrth of San Diego, it seems to combine several Googie elements. Thanks, ifranz, for this locationless cache; we'll certainly miss them when they go away at the end of 2005.

This one is in Orange County's City of San Clemente on El Camino Real near Avenida Miramar. It's very close to others but especially close to one found on 16 Feb 03. This bell has a plain rim instead of the embellished one on the earlier find and the post has no sign. Not sure if it replaced the other one or if we just missed seeing it but we would have expected that one to show up in the photo background and it didn't. Thanks, Parsa, for this locationless; we're sad that they're going away soon.

This spot is only about 1/2 mile from home and hadn't yet been logged. I guess we're just lucky. It's in the Bay Park neighborhood of San Diego and is a normal middle-class area. The actual spot is at the left edge of the driveway about midway up. In addition to pics, we're also uploading a Google Earth screen capture to provide an overhead view. Thanks, EraSeek, for this locationless cache.

We ran across this fire truck at the Palomar Mountain store on Palomar Mountain, located in the northern portion of southern California's San Diego County. It's just down the road from the world-famous observatory where we spent our afternoon. The vehicle is owned by the US Forest Service and is dedicated to fighting wild fires. In fact, the "CNF" initials on the door stand for Cleveland National Forest, which is where the truck is stationed. Thanks, The Little Ones, for this locationless cache.

This is the Pala Mission, located on the Pala Indian Reservation in the northern portion of southern California's San Diego County. It was founded in 1816 as an adjunct to the San Luis Rey Mission.

A priest was sitting in a chair in the yard in front of the mission while we were there. He was absorbed in prayer; to avoid disturbing him we didn't approach any closer than the gate and walls of the compound.

In addition to mission pictures, we're uploading photos of some informational signs. Thanks for this locationless cache.

This globe is in front of the Jai Alai stadium in Tijuana, Mexico. Not sure but I think they stopped playing Jai Alai games here a couple of years ago. Anyway, it was closed the last time we stopped by and seemed closed today. Thanks for this locationless cache.

We found this lighthouse in Aprilbut lost track of the photos, so couldn't log it. We photographed the lighthouse from the US side of the Mexican border at the Pacific Ocean. It's the most northwesterly lighthouse in Mexico and sits adjacent to the Bullring By The Sea, just west of Tijuana. On the US side sits Border Fields State Park which, other than the Border Patrol and us, was deserted on the day we took the pictures. (Construction had closed the entrance road and the roundtrip walk from nearest parking was about three miles.) Thanks for this locationless cache. We'll miss them when they're gone.

A fact sheet regarding the Tijuana lighthouse:
Active; focal plane 32 m (105 ft); white flash every 6 s. 22 m (72 ft) cylindrical white concrete tower, unpainted. The lighthouse was built fairly recently as part of a plan to develop Tijuana's beachfront. Located next to the beach just a few feet from the U.S. border and the "Bullring by the Sea" (Plaza de Toros Monumental), which is part of the same development. Site open, tower closed. NGA List 14338.
