Logs for Chan Clan

09-Jun-12
Bit muddy after it rains.

TFTC

Left magnetic boomerang.
Took nothing

Our GPS died 6 years ago and today was the very first time we have done any geocaching since then.
Nice little walk up the hill from behing our house in Banks.
Used the GPS on my smartphone, but intend to purchase a dedicated hiking GPS soon.
Fairly easy find.
Don't forget to bring a pen as there is none in the box.

OOps! Clean forgot that we managed to get this geocache in whilst on our holiday from Canberra Australia.
Had planned to do a whole lot more but the geokids decided that holiday time was not for geoaching.
Can't recall what we left, but yes we were the culprits that took a geocoin, but didn't log it on the internet till now.

Been a bit lazy lately with logging of our geocache visits.
Found this one back on 28th October.
Can't recall what we took or left.

Couldn't let Rathome be the only one to find this one today
so the geowife and I did a last minute dash up the hill to find it after a weekend of hiking in the area.

Hadn't expected to be doing any geocaching this weekend so had nothing to swap.

25-Apr-06
Just managed to fit this cache in as the sun was going down.
Left plastic Australian boomerang. Took nothing.

22-Apr-06
Made the mistake of approaching from the base of the cliff face and couldn't get a reliable satellite fix with my otherwise good Magellan eXplorist 600 GPS - As such couldnt tell if the cache was at the base or top of the cliff??
After wondering up and down for half an hour and attempting some rather dangerous cliff climbing, we finally got a good fix at the top of the cliff. Inspite of that, it still took the geowife and I some time to find the cache which was nearly 7 metres closer to the precarious edge of the cliff than my GPS pinpointed it to be.

Didn't have anything to leave however had to take the IQ puzzle, as the container was full and started to crack when I attempted to close the lid.

17-Apr-06
The geowife and I actually had to find this one the brute force way using the hints and little aid of a GPS as I didn't have my normal Magellan Explorist 600 GPS with me and instead only had my ASUS MyPal A636 GPS PDA, which is good for car navigation but almost totally useless for GeoCaching. Try as we might, I just couldn't get the stupid GPS to take a reliably satellite fix in amongst the trees.
Had nothing to swap so took nothing and left nothing.

Easy find by the geowife and I inspite of the fact I didn't have my normal Magellan Explorist 600 GPS with me and had to use my ASUS MyPal A636 GPS PDA, which is good for car navigation but almost totally useless for GeoCaching on foot.

26-Feb-06
Took a bit of walking around in circles amongst the trees before we found what we were supposed to find at the start coordinates, however once found the rest was quite fun.
We actually started at around 6pm on Saturday afternoon, however resolving the puzzle involved travelling a little more than we had expected, so we had to return the next day to complete the last step of the puzzle.

Took 2 dollar coin, and left green wishing stone.

Lastly, I'd like to thank the S's for creating what I found to be one of the more original idea caches in Canberra that was also fun to find.

19-Feb-06
Quick easy, once the coordinates had been calculated.

A lot of muggles around, but I think most were having too much fun in the river to notice.

Took fabric comb. Left boomerang keyring.

11-Feb-06
Decided to come and pay a visit to one very cute (and lonely) SpaceMan 'Snoopy' with one slightly melted helmet. (I assume from the bushfires)

Took a strange metal keyring like object??, and left a padlock.

Took a couple of photos of the scenery, then left, leaving 'Snoopy' to patiently wait until the next adventuring geocacher makes his way up to this high point in the ACT.

NB: The plastic bag holding the logbook, is starting to split, so it would be a idea for the next visitor to bring a replacement.

05-Feb-06
With a copy of the photo of ThomasS at the entrance to the cave, and a bit of luck, we found this cache rather easily, giving us a little time to admire the views of the Orrorral valley below.

Took US dime, and left rubber wrist band.

29-Jan-06
Quite a creative idea for a geocache.
I'm sure the geokids would have enjoyed it more if not for the sweltering heat.

This was quite a fun cache to locate inspite of the sweltering heat.

Stopped for a pitstop at MacDonalds half way through and bought icecreams for the geokids and geowife.

Took small plastic torch.
Left white rubber wrist band, and small metal padlock.

28-Jan-06
Found it on this hot day in January.

Left: rubber wrist band.
Took: rubber snake.

19-Jan-06
Quite an easy find, involving little walking.
I image it would have been a very nice location before the fires.

My GPS pinpointed a location some 30 metres away, however the cache was in a fairly obvious location so was easy to find.

Container is no longer glued to anything and the log book is probably wet beyond reuse. Left the log book outside of its plastic bag in the hope it may dry out a little.

07-Jan-06
Last cache for the day. Surprised there were not more entries in the log as it is quite a scenic location.

Found it after using the calculator to do the complicated calculation. Rode the push bikes in this time.

This was an easy find on the way back from Melrose Monks.

A muggle briefly stopped in his car and must have wondered what on earth we were up to.

06-Jan-06
Boy, was that a hard calculation. I couldn't do long division on paper. Gave up and went home for the calculator. Smile Try again tomorrow.

05-Jan-06
Don't quite understand why we are the first to do this cache for 6 months as the views are quite good at the cache location and it was not too strenuous a walk.

Took strange looking long billed bug?? Left marble.

NB: Container needs replacing as the lid is perished and cracked.

Such a relief to be able to do a cache in cooler weather, after the sweltering weather we have been having lately.

Took Chinese coin/medalion?? Left kitty cat hair clip.

04-Jan-06
My wife and I managed to fit this and 'Tailors Torment' in after work, while the kids were away at summer camp.

NB: Someone needs to bring up a new log book as this one is full.

My wife using her calculator brain had the final coordinates worked out in a jiffy, but the climb straight up the hill sure slowed her down.

Quite a squeeze to fit the contents into the small cache container.

Couldn't find any 'fig trees' so don't know if our final coordinates were correct. Coordinates we came up with appeared to indicate cache was across the other side of the river and we couln't see an easy way to cross without getting wet, so we left it for now and will perhaps have another go sometime in the future.

This one is definitely no 'meander', and not for the geokids!
After first successfully visiting the "Tharwa'nd Away" cache, we worked our way half way up on the right river bank along an existing path before deciding to cross over to the left bank when the path petered out and the long dry grass got a bit much.
I think it was a mistake however as the last 300 metres was a torturous rock climb and crossing back over to the right hand side river bank would have entailed a swim in deep water. Fortunately at the location of the cache there were some boulders enabling us to rock hop over to the other side.
We didn't have the photos of the cache location to guide us, however it was fairly easy to find using the hint "You can only see it with your head near the ground.".

The trip back was along the right bank, and although we got covered in 'black' charcoal, scratched and bleeding, and our socks looked like porcupines from the grass seeds, we made it back in half the time.

I think if I was to try this one again I would try coming in on one of the fire trails.

I have a suspicion it is no longer in it's original hiding place as we found it out in the open and quite easy to find.
I'm sure kids playing in the area could stumble upon it so perhaps someone who knows where it should be hidden could re-hide it.

Magellan eXplorist 600 GPS actually indicated about 10 meters away but still found it quite easily as it appeared the most obvious place to hide a cache.

Found after a hard days swimming at the beach.
Cache lid still missing.

25-Dec-05
This one was close to my brother's house in Theodore where we had just had Christmas lunch.
Hoped to work a bit of the christmas lunch off, but it ended up being rather an easy walk.

17-Dec-05
Would never had found this excellent view of the Jindabyne town if not for this cache.

Very pleasant stroll along the edge of the lake to find this one.

04-Dec-05
Made a mistake with this one by starting on the Condor side not realising that the track up to the top of the hill starts on the Theodore side.

If you do this one in summer, remember to wear long trousers as the thistles are quite bad at the top.

19-Nov-05
This was our very first family GeoCache outing, and first find for our new Magellan eXplorist 600 GPS.

Probably best to do this one on a cool day as that hill is quite a climb and the flies can be bothersome.

Views excellent especially with the green grass on the hills.

Took whistle and snake, and left small plastic , polar bear, dinosaur, kangaroo, and, giraffe.
