Logs for duncanw

Been a while, so checked out the cache with Dianne. Very windy, but cache in good condition. A bit of green moss growing on the outside, but dry on the inside. Dianne logged the visit in the notebook. Pen added and fish removed.
25-Dec-09
Owner check of the cache. If good condition, dry. Grass growth in the area neatly conceals the cache from the nearby track at this time of year. In common with many entries in the log book for the cache - it is WINDY up here!
01-Nov-08
Cache has been cleaned, sun dried, and is now back in place. It doesn't smell any more! Current inventory:
- Notebook, pen, pencils, sharpener, eraser
- CD, PC memory, 9-pin plug, CD foam ring
- Pocket glider
- "I Found It" card from no fixed abode
- Jester, whistle, Ninja turtle
- 4 lizards
- keyring, marble
A word of warning - wind. I replaced the cache on Crows Nest during "gale force north-westerlies". Whilst it can be fun and exhilarating, it is also a little dangerous. The wind on the hill tops is strong enough to blow you over - into a gorse bush, or you could fall and sprain an ankle. I recommend doing the cache on a fine sunny day (for views) with light winds!

Geocache is now back in place. It has been cloudy around the hill tops today, one walker complained that in the white out it was difficult to find the marker posts along the skyline walkway.
Temporarily retrieved cache to dry it out and give TLC. Will be back in place shortly.
23-Jul-06
Dropped in to check on the cache. Despite all the rain over the past few weeks it is dry and in good order.
27-Dec-05
Nice park. Found the first waypoint but had no idea how to find the next. Searched all around the seat but found no clue as to the next waypoint. Too hard for me.
26-Dec-05
The school bus came up this road, but first time I've ever been to the Springs. Also the first cache found by my Mother and sister who accompanied me (they live in the area). People enjoying a dip in the hot summer weather.
What a lovely spot. Nice day, nice walk. Cache in good condition. Didn't add or take anything.
Lovely beach, Pohutakawa trees in flower, quite a lot of people around. Took a while to find this cache, cleverly hidden. Maybe a clue would be nice! Took nothing, added nothing.
Drizzling and lots of people at the lookout (not enjoying much of a view). Three of us searched around the rocks but found nothing, and after spending 10 minutes getting wet I gave up.
Grew up in this area, but back in Whakatane only for Christmas. Took my Mother and sister cache hunting, and enjoyed a good view of Whakatane. I've never been to this lookout before. Took nothing, added nothing.
A little spot near where I grew up that I didn't know existed. Visited with my parents whilst in Bay of Plenty for Christmas. Raining but sheltered within the bush area. Cache nice and dry in the ammo container.
10-Jul-05
Went up with two other carloads of people on our way to Castlepoint. Excellent views, though the road is a little rough on the way up. Cache in good condition. Added a CD and removed a bouncy ball.
Dodging the approaching cold front and rain, had some assistance from some young helpers who didn't mind rummaging around the bushes. Didn't take or add anything. Not too many visitors at Castlepoint mid-winter, good time for a drive out to the region.
06-Jul-05
Took two muggles with me from work (Cathy and Dominic) and walked across the road at lunchtime to find the cache. Hurrah - we are the first to log it. After much deliberation we added a 5 cent piece to the collection - not too much room for anything else.
Despite having two muggles with me we were unable to find the cache. The area has recently been trod by many Lions, but it may just be well hidden. Will try again when there are less people around.
25-Jun-05
Check-up on the geocache. The paint has worn off the top of the plastic box but otherwise in very good condition. With winter the grass has died making it a little easier to spot, if you know exactly where to look!
11-Jun-05
Finally found this cache on my 4th attempt. Not so covered with pine needles to easy to spot. Cache in good condition. Passed a group of tourists being shown the LOTR sites.
16-Apr-05
Met Rolly on the way, who also didn't find this cache. It may be there, but if you want to find it bring thick gloves and a weed-eater to cut through the gorse. Great walk though, and make sure you return via Lake Kohangapiripiri.
03-Apr-05
Not an area of Wellington I have explored before. Great quiet walk. Noone else up there. Good views from the top. A few more tracks in the area I will explore in the near future. On my GPS the co-ordinates of the cache were S41.11.168 E174.58.132 accuracy 4m. +/- nothing.

Good spot. The box is a tight fit into the hole, hope it doesn't put on weight. Plenty of room in the box for more maps. Added a map of the London Underground 2004 (handy for travel bugs). Thanks Rolly.
28-Mar-05
Rolly found it one day before me! Somebody else had also found this cache overnight as the cannister and contents were strewn over the ground, with the money and tokens neatly stacked up on the seat. Put the cache back together, so there is now notebook, pencil, US dime, timeout token, 5 cent piece, a small sticker, and I added a white paperclip. Good spot for a cache, but if vandalised again it may have to be hidden a little better.
27-Mar-05
Nice walk, first time I've been up via Kowhai St. Cache in very good condition. Took about 20 mins to find - many places to hide a cache in the bush and my GPS pointed 7.9 metres away from the location of the cache. GPS reception is patchy but is okay in the vicinty of the cache.
13-Feb-05
Driven past but never stopped here before. Helpful locals also keen to talk about their historic feature!
12-Feb-05
Never knew this reserve existed! Lovely easy walk. Cache did take some searching amongst the bracken and gorse. My GPS read 41.10.234/235 and 174.59.137-139 on the spot, so that may help other searchers. Ginger beer and packet of chips still in cache, but none of the 3 pens are working so I couldn't leave an entry in log book. Slightly damp inside.
There are some nasty prickly plants nearby that jump out and grab you when you get near! Cache in good condition. +/- nothing. Good view over Gracefield and Petone from the top of the hill by a "No Exit" sign - windy, but always windy on the top of the hill!
29-Jan-05
Visited this cache again with the Kennedy family (the first cache they have found in Wellington) - added an airplane and took the batteries. Arrived at the same time as two other keen geocaches, first time there has been competition to find the cache! Max and Alice found the cache first.
24-Jan-05
No signs of any seals, but the smell was there! Found it after a little climb, but it was in a spot easily seen (when you are looking in the right place!). Didn't add or take anything. The travel bug is still there. Hasn't been visited for a while which is a surprise because its an easy walk.
16-Jan-05
Nobody has been here for a while, not since September. Cache has lots of interesting items in it - added Watto Travel Bug. Glorious day but always windy on the tops of these hills.
14-Jan-05
Fun finding it. A few cows around. Brilliant sunny day. The binoculars very handy - please no-one take them. The notebook is full - a new one is needed.
13-Jan-05
Never knew the reserve existed, my first trip there. Nice area and good view. Found cache easily, co-ordinated spot on, good GPS reception at the cache area. Did not add or remove anything.
I was wise and brought a torch to assist with the walk through the tunnel! Next time I pass this way I'll continue on to Maymorn. The cache location was a bit of a giveaway with trodden grass leading right to it!
Quite a busy little park, I think with some preparations for the forthcoming Jousting tournament in Upper Hutt. Found cache easily, safely located in the busy park.
12-Jan-05
Thought I found the right tree, looked long and hard, but no joy. Hard one to find.
Finally found it, well hidden and small fingers needed to pick it up! And I located Grindrods name on the memorial. Too small to add or remove anything!
Difficult finding this cache as it is quite small. Not a great area for GPS signal, but got to the right vicinity quickly. Did not add or remove anything.
11-Jan-05
Easy find. Nice viewpoint, haven't been up here much. Pathways are very well laid out for a longer walk. Cache co-ordinates spot on.
10-Jan-05
Travel Bug 88 Nascar is in this new cache - please note that 88 Nascar wants to go to Australia.
09-Jan-05
The large tree is down, pity, but the cache is there there intact. Took the car travel bug. First visitor to this cache this year! A few horses nearby, and some chickens in the magazine by the Old Coach Rd turnoff.
07-Jan-05
Good views and a sunny day. Found the cache easily (using the clue). Tracks in the grass also gave the location away.
29-Dec-04
Had a good look in what seemed to be exactly the area, but no sign of cache. Tree felling and bulldozing in the immediate vicinity - cache either buried or munched?
27-Dec-04
An easy spot to find. Good views. Small group of people eating lunch beside the memorial enjoying the day.
Another place I never knew existed. Enjoyed the view of the airport and the gun emplacements. Took about 10 mins searching to find the cache.
Hunted round the area afforded by the clue, but no luck finding this one.
Found it quickly. Beautiful fine sunny day, first sunshine during Christmas break.
Unusual spot with a good view of the airport. Climbed the hill despite my very sore right ankle. GPS got me within 3 metres of the cache.
